Getting back into golf

    Hi all,

I used to play a bit of golf when I was younger but the last few years in college have been tough so I rarely had the time to play. since I finished though I have a bit more free time, so I am looking to getting back into playing again and this time going properly about it. I mostly just play par 3 courses at the moment but am considering shelling out for a membership of a local club in the next few weeks.

First thing off is I do currently have some clubs but they are a complete basket case all different makes etc and I have no woods, so I need to actually buy a set of clubs in near future. Second thing is I am a lefty, so getting a set is a little more difficult for me. I am currently looking at purchasing a set of Wilson clubs either the X-31's or the profile VF after a quick browse through ebay my budget is roughly 300 Euros and I kind of want to get a set that will last me a little while.

So any tips on a good set to get or how to improve etc would be more than welcome.

First off, enjoy getting back into the game because no other sport comes close IMHO.

Second, I wouldn't buy a new set at the price point you mentioned. I would buy used in a top make which can come very clean just a couple if years old. I wouldn't reccomend a particular set, a lot can depend on ball striking and swing speed when choosing clubslook at brands like ping and you wouldn't go wrong. But for example €300 you should get g15 irons and driver. I know I'd be happier with them over your wilsons.
    Good luck and enjoy.

    Edit.
Forgot to say check out adverts.ie/golf great selection of used stuff there.

thanks for the tips m r c will have a look around for good used clubs. Anything I should be looking for in clubs? Like I see different things in the descriptions of clubs like forged and cavity etc, so what would I be looking for as a relative beginner.

If you are new to the game, then realistically you should probably be looking at what would be called game improvement or super game improvement irons, rather than player irons.

These are usually cavity back irons which are much more forgiving so you can get away with mi****s.

Depending on where you are based I'd be thinking of heading to a range that has a shop attached as they'll usually let you try out a couple of clubs.

Find a type of club you like, then, as previous poster said, look for a good equivalent second hand set.

Also if you're serious about things, invest in a few lessons at the start and get your basic technique right, will pay dividends in the long run!

Best of luck & welcome to the madhouse

I wouldn't be too descriptive as far as what you 'should' be looking for.

Two options really, trial and error and some qualified advice. If you can you should go with the latter. Too many people end up having had a few sets before they were happy. But in the end you should get clubs that suit your eye too. I started with reg flex gi irons and now play stiff 'player' type ones. So I'm only qualified to tell you not to do as I did :-)

Spotted a set of Wilson Ci9 Irons for a cheap price on ebay, would these be a good set for a relative beginner?

How much did you see them for on ebay blackwave??

im in a similar position to you myself (not getting back into golf but looking for some easy to hit irons) and I was looking at the ci9's too from what i read they are sort of 50/50 between game improvement irons and playability.

Are they new? They're on American golf for around €235 delivered with a free Wilson wedge thrown in no point in paying the same on eBay when theres a free wedge on American Golf :pac:

Small problem with that is that they are right handed and I am a lefty unfortunately :(

That would be a slight problem alright haha
Have you found any more info about the clubs like how forgiving they are?

I have kinda chosen a few clubs to look at for myself

    http://www.halpennygolf.com/wilson-profile-set-p-1043.html?manufacturers_id=31

Full set and can get it for €250 in my local shop or off Ebay, not having to buy anything for the immediate future kinda suits my budget best for now tbh.

Seems to be nice irons set for a high handicapper

    http://www.adverts.ie/golf/ping-g10-irons/2687641

probably soem of the better second hand clubs I could find on donedeal/adverts etc.

My biggest problem is that I am unemployed so cant afford to spend a load of money on getting a dear set so kinda limited with choice particularly being left handed as well. Was looking at ebay for sets of Mizuno JPX 800's, Ping G15's but couldnt find any in my budget for second hand clubs to be honest. Any recommendations on what other sets I could look at?
