The spec is the important part rather than the grade.

If you are using fixed service intervals then you can use VW 505.01 spec (usually a 5W40 grade) or VW 507.00 spec (usually a 5W30 grade) oil.

If you are on variable (long life) intervals then you need to use an oil that meets 507.00 spec.

Be careful as not all 5W40 oils meet 505.01 and equally not all 5W30 meets 507.00. The specs should be written on the can. If the oil you have meets neither spec then don't use it.

You are only on the right road if it states the VW spec you need on the can.

I never knew of a red I on the Caddy ?

in 2005 they had the 2.0L straight diesel non Turbo and the 1.9 TDI 104 PS PD but no red I ?

The DMF and Front left wheel bearing went on my 2005 Caddy at 15,000 kms.

There were no 1.9TDI 130bhp Caddys.

There were no 1.9TDI 130bhp Caddys.

No there wasn't and speaking of "I" wasn't the red "DI" the 130 hp in the Volkswagen's and the "I" in the Audi's ?

But as you said there was no 130 hp caddy's.

It was only the later caddy's that got the 2.0L 140 ps TDI. Not even sure if that were available in Ireland ?

Op if you don't believe George about the vw specs for the engine oil walk into halfords etc and look at the back of the oil cans you won't be long about seeing these specs written on them. I've seen them on oils we've used in the past and George is correct in what he's saying he normally is.

You would think. A vw dealer parts store guy (very very experienced) put it down my neck that quantum synta 10w40 oil he had was the correct one for a pd engined octavia. It was 505.00 spec oil he was selling which was clearly wrong. He said they only stocked that and the longlife oil.

unreal, you would think they wouldn't get that wrong. at least you were in collecting it yourself and not sending in someone to collect it. nothing as bad as someone arriving home with the wrong parts. I got two 25 litre drums 5/30 504.507 through the trade link, was good value. Their timing belt kits are fantastic value, providing you have a genuine vw water pump to bring back.

They don't actually use it in their own workshops, they use Castrol. They only sell the Quantum oil through their parts network.

Both made by BP. You think there is much of a difference?

    It's 145 versus 175euro for a 20l drum that's all I know.
