I've been looking at some recent local road race results.

    Great Ireland Run, 30:15
    Enniscorthy 10k, 30:13
Duncannon 10k, 30:30 not AAI so maybe I shouldn't count this one!

Does anybody know of an Irish man under 30mins this year or what race will offer the best chance?

Has it to be in Ireland?

doesn't have to be in Ireland, but it's a little more interesting if it's close to home!
would a 29:xx make you the best amateur 10k road runner in Ireland?

Ah ok. Cragg got 29.20 in Holyoke, Massachusetts on March 16th.

For local road-races so far this year, I can't think of any Irishmen going sub-30. In recent years it would be rare. Mark Kenneally went sub-30 a couple of times in the Great Ireland Run.

Road-races offering the best chance? Probably Great Ireland Run, Seeley Cup (Belfast), Dunshaughlin...
They are not necessarily the fastest, flattest courses, but attract a strong, competitive enough field.

    Stephen Scullion
    Paul Pollock
    Sean Hehir
    Mark Kenneally
    Sean Connolly
    Tom Fitzpatrick
    John Coghlan
    Brian Maher
    John Travers
    Big Joe
All of these have the potential to go sub 30 for 10km on Irish roads providing conditions and course are suitable (excluding American based athletes).

The top four runners in the Great Ireland Run 2010 (Icelandic volcano year) were:
    1. Martin Fagan (Ireland) 29:17
    2. Gary Thornton (Ireland) 29:36
    3. Andrew Ledwith (Ireland) 29:48
    4. Joseph Sweeney (Ireland) 29:59
So a good sprinkling there. Fagan also won the 2011 race in 29:35 (make of that what you will). Mark Keneally ran 29:35 in the same race last year (Thomas Fitzpatrick just missed out with 30:03). Stephen Scullion just missed out this year (30:15).

John Coghlan impressive jogging circa 30:26 alone in Dublin night run last Sunday. Worth sub 30 if pushed. Sad to see it was Sprinter and Dub GAA player make the headlines.

Its a little depressing though to compare with even the results of the london marathon, they went through 10k at 28:56.

Both Shane Quinn and Kevin Dooney broke 30 this year but that was on track.
