Its a well used from new Sony Vaio VGN-N11m
    http://www.sony.co.uk/support/en/product/VGN-N11M_W/specifications
With 2gb ram added windows 7, bigger HD new screen, dvd player and battery.

    Mobile Intel® 945GM Express Chipset
(Intel® 82945GM Graphics and Memory Controller)

    http://ark.intel.com/products/27857/Intel-82945GM-Graphics-and-Memory-Controller

I simply want it to run winrar and Photoshop a little faster. And maybe play HD movies a littler better.

I was looking on ebay and I can upgrade the processor maybe to a Core Duo T2600 or T2700 or maybe a Core 2 Duo T7600 Mobile Processor

Its a fairly old laptop now and has been seeding torrents for over 5 years 24/7. But I like it. Its never let me down.

    Can it be done?

Did you remove all the crapware bloat Sony have installed? I've seen Sony laptops with a 90-100 processes running, Windows 7 itself is about 35. Open Task manager and tell us how many you see, it's written at the bottom

I'm Not sure how this is a good way to tell if you have bloatware installed.
Remember some apps like Chrome open a new process for each tab and there is nothing wrong with this.
It's only worthwhile to focus on tasks that are using more memory or cpu cycles than expected.

To be honest I installed windows 7 recently and the computer is not that bloated. The vaio stuff is all gone. I do have PS bridge and other programs running in the background. Nothing major.
But I would still like to upgrade the system. I see processors on line for around 50 quid.
Its just the compatibility that concerns me and the fact I have never installed a new processor before .. I has hoping its just plug and play.
I cant afford to buy a new computer at the moment.

Yeah, it's not the best method, my point is it's a Sony, above any manufacturer they ship absolutely riddled with crap you don't need or want

Why? He has just recently done a fresh install of windows 7, why repeat that?
    buy new memory

Why, he already has the max installed for that model laptop?

I'm not sure that upgrade is enough to make much difference. You are still limited by other parts of the system that can't be changed due to the limited nature of laptops.

Every thread your info is "fresh install and more memory". A fresh install often does SFA, and will still install the bloatware.

Even updating to better core 2 duo processor is not really going to make that big of a difference.Would you be able to fit the new processor in yourself? Most PC shops will not look at changing a laptop processor because of the many problems that can go wrong with temperatures etc. If you do find a shop that will do it it will cost around 70 euro and you won't really notice any change.

You probably need more RAM, 8GB is the sweet spot right now. 256 GB SSD would be nice but not a necessity really. The graphics card in your laptop will probably hold your laptop back with photoshop depending on how old the laptop is which is probably the biggest issue with and probably can't be upgraded as its soldered on and would be very expensive to update it and 99% of shops would not even try.

Better off just buying a new one. Your laptop isn't really updateable. I added a link below to a decent laptop. I have to say as well Sony Vaio are overpriced pieces of junk!!

I've one laptop with 2GB of RAM and a 965 Intel GFX and 1.5 C2D and it plays 720p fine but 1080 is too much for it.It plays but theres tiny stutters which some may not notice but annoy me. I have another with 3GB of RAM and 2Ghz C2D and it plays 1080 fine, but the reason for that is it has a Nvida 7900 gfx in it.

So I think your limitation is the gfx in your laptop. Theres nothing you can do to improve that. If you were to buy a basic i3 with HD4000 it would a better investment (in time and energy) than messing around with your current machine.

Keep the Sony as a backup machine or for other tasks, or sell it to take the sting out of a new machine.

What are you doing in Photoshop that you are finding slow? Are they big files? Using filters or something else?

yeah. straight out s dslr camera and I like HDR processing .

I will start saving for a new machine and use this machine to seed torrents maybe.

    Thanks for your advise. Everyone.

As the laptop is SATA1 a small stop-gap would be to get a small (sub 100GB) SSD drive?

    http://www.dabs.ie/products/corsair-128gb-force-series-gs-sata-6gb-s-2-5--solid-state-drive-8L7W.html?refs=56350000-52450000-50113&src=3

€133 for 128GB. The read and write speeds are fairly insane, but I doubt your laptop will get them. On the plus side, when you upgrade, it'll be good for the new one (and will save you from having to worry about having a good one in the new laptop). Also on the plus, although your laptop won't get the bull effect, it'll still be a LOT faster than your current system.

The main bottleneck will be the CPU and GFX though for processing in Photoshop and HD movies. Loading times with images would be greatly reduced with an SSD, and like you say you can take it with you to the new machine.

Whats the reliablity of Corsairs SSD vs Intel etc.

Reliability, not sure, but the write speed of the Intel SSD's were dismal when I got my own Corsair a year ago. Looked there, and the Intel write speeds are now very decent. I think Intels warranty is 5 years?

OP; with the old laptops harddrives, you click something, the disk spins, it finds it, it opens it, but with the SSDs, you click something, it opens. As an added bonus, due to no moving parts, your laptop battery will last a bit longer.
