The Irish Times makes a point that the last 'Royal' to pay a visit there was the late Princess Grace of Monaco back in 1975.

Personally, I have a problem connecting Monaco with anything Irish, though, no doubt, the Irish historians here can put me right about that.

Might it have something to do with the fact that her maiden name was Kelly and her Grandfather came from Newport Co. Mayo?

    The article says :

The first member of a royal family to pay an official visit to the cemetery since Princess Grace of Monaco in 1975

Princess Grace was a member of the monegasque royal family. I'm not sure i see what the issue is with the article.

Not an issue, per se, just wondering why Princess Grace may have visited, that's all.

    Shrug.

If I recall correctly she had planned to build a holiday home in Mayo and visited twice, her family were of Irish descent and I believe her father was an olympic rower.

I may have got this wrong, but you have answered your own question. Princess Grace Kelly visiting is no different to President Kennedy. As pointed out she had bought the old family home and intended to rebuild it.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_B._Kelly,_Sr.

Kelly's father, he was a real mensch, quite a family history. Check out the dowry he gave gave Rainier. One of a series of Irish leaders to work their way up from nothing in Philly society back in the day. My brother married a lady from one of those families, her dad ran a trucking company and knew the Kellys.
