I'm thinking of heading to San Sebastian for a week in June with the girlfriend. I don't see any direct flights so was thinking of flying to Biarritz and renting a car. Are there other areas around there within diving distance that are worth visiting? Is there much to do in San Sebastian? What would the weather be like there in June?

    Thanks,
    Bener.

You don't really need to rent a car if you're just going to use it to get from Biarritz to San Sebastian. It's two very, very short train journeys - the first on a LUAS type tram then you get out at the train-station and hope on the train to San Sebastian. Shouldn't take more than 50 minutes total. Weather would be great in June, real beach weather.

I'm heading there the end of the month with the girlfriend and two friends. Really looking forward to it.

If you like your food then its supposedly one of the best places in the world to go. Two of the top ten restaurants in the world (Mugaritz, Arzak) are in San Sebastian.

There are hundreds of other options there as well though if you don't fancy spending a fortune.

Does anyone know what kinds of temperatures would it be in mid June - preferably from you're own experience of being there? Was considering going to San Sebastian with the OH but I looked it up and the average temperature for our dates(9th-19th June) was only about 22 degrees. We were hoping for a sun/beach holiday but the temperature put us off, ideally looking for somewhere a little hotter at 25+.

    Cheers Super_Furry,
I might just get the train so. Would it be worth staying in Biarritz for a night or 2? I could rent the car and head to Bilboa as well but only if it would be worth it. Is there much to do in San Sebastian?

Unless you're travelling on a Sunday it's an even quicker bus journey - I think it takes less than an hour - use the website www.alsa.es .

Weather is very changeable in San Sebastian and can go from rain to sun to rain very quickly. It has the best tapas in the world - try going from bar to bar in Constitution Square. Accommodation can be expensive - we stayed in Hotel Niza which was nice. Beaches are lovely and nightlife is lively. A great place but bring an umbrella!

Weather tends to be more stable in Biarritz - it's worth staying a couple of nights there. Again, there are some very good restaurants. Because it's the Atlantic Coast the sea can be dangerous and swimming can be restricted. The casino is fun (you will need your passport) and they LOVE their rugby there! A pelota game is worth catching too. People are very friendly - especially if you try a bit of French. Lots of Irish holidaying there so it can feel a bit like an Irish resort at times - but don't let that put you off! Eating out is good value - bars are expensive.

On our holiday there we flew into Bilbao and out of Biarritz and used public transport all the time. It was no bother and good value. Parking can be expensive in the towns so consider this if you're thinking of hiring a car.

Myself and my GF spent 9 days in that area about 18months ago. We flew in and out of Bilbao. We stayed a few days in Bilbao before hiring a car and heading along the coast to San Sebastian. Its a beautiful part of the world with some great little fishing towns like Lekeitio and Hondarribia where we spent a night in each. The food especially the sea food is top class and cracking value. San Sebastian is a great city. Its got the beach literally in the city centre with a great old part of town with plenty of lively Pintxos (tapas) bars. You could spend the whole day walking between them having a drink and some food in each!! The temperature in Sept was a comfortable 20-22degrees so I would presume June would get up close to 30.
We took the motorway back to Bilbao rather than the coast road again and it only took maybe 90mins or so.
Would definitely recommend the trip whatever way you decide to do it.

Defo get the train car isn't needed. Also you may have insurance problems with a French car in Spain.

Heading that way (Biarritz) for 3 days end of May. No accommodation booked yet. Would it be possible to do a day trip to San Sebastian?
