If I exchange a driving license that was issued in another EU country for an Irish one, can I get it back? I realise that it's an exchange however I have heard that it is possible to get the original EU license back.

    Anyone clarify this? Thanks.

Presumably you could exchange the Irish one for one of the country you had in the first place?

The old country will still have you registered as a full driver so it's not like you give it up entirely.
I think the Irish authorities just take your licence and stores it, or destroy it - not sure.
So when/if you go back to XX you can simply either convert the Irish back or just get a new one from them.

They send it to country which issued it.

Yeah, they send it off. You don't get it back. My hubby had huge problems changing his btw, he ended up having to do a driving test (and it was actually mostly the fault of the other country's systems not the RSA)

Also, if they know you have an Irish licence and one from a foreign country they'll take the foreign one off you. I had an Irish and a New Zealand licence (in NZ they don't take your Irish one off you when you use it to get an NZ licence). I went into the motor tax office to change my name on my Irish licence to my married name and stupidly ticked on the form I had a licence from another country without thinking. Once they saw that they had to take the NZ one off me. You have been warned! :)
