PC Build

Looking to get a new PC - the one I have is a few years old and I havent been following trends in the last few years so need some advice on a good build. I work both at programming and at graphic design so need something that will run the likes of photoshop and illustrator together without any issues.

I possibly might buy a mac mini down the line as the programming I do is mainly iOs development, currently have a mac book pro im using but might get a mac mini and use a kvm switch or similar to swap between pc and mac mini. Gaming wise I usually play on consoles but thats partly because my own pc is getting old, probably use it for games like Diablo 3/WoW/AoE.

In terms of drives would an SSD with the main programs and windows running from it be the best way to go and then use the HDD for file storage?

    1. What is your budget? €1400-1600

    2. What will be the main purpose of the computer?
Graphic design/Programming and some Gaming..probably games along the likes of Diablo 3

    3. Do you need a copy of Windows? Yes

    4. Can you use any parts from an old computer? No

    5. Do you need a monitor? Yes, would like to have Dual monitors

5a. If yes, what size do you need. 24's but would settle for 22's if price was an issue

    6. Do you need any of these peripherals? Keyboard and Mouse - wouldnt mind some decent 5.1 speakers but they would be an extra that I could manage without initially

    7. Are you willing to try overclocking? Yes

    8. How can you pay? Bank Transfer/Credit Card/Laser/Paypal

    9. When are you purchasing? In the next few weeks more than likely

    10. If you need help building it, where are you based? N/A

    Thanks!

Enough left for a keyboard and mouse. If you're not going to be overclocking like mad, you can remove the H100, and swap it for something like this instead. Whatever cooler you use though, I'd stick Gentle Typhoons on it; they're the best fans around.

There's also two 24" IPS monitors in that build as well, should do very nicely. Since you're going to be doing a lot of development, I'd maybe look into a mechanical keyboard as well. They're not cheap, but they're lovely to type on, far nicer than a traditional membrane keyboard. Look here if you've no idea what I'm on about.

Thanks for the post, not going to be overclocking like mad just giving myself the option to I suppose. How safe are liquid cooled, never had one before - is it worth it? If I was to remove the H100 and forget the keyboard and mouse where would you suggest spending the money to upgrade elsewhere if anywhere?

It's a pretty well balanced build as-is. Maybe upgrade to a 7950, that would be about the only thing.

As to whether the cooler is worth it, it depends on what you want. You'll probably get an extra 3-400MHz out of the CPU with it, and it'll be less noisy than an air cooler as well. It's up to you whether you want to be at 4.4 or 4.7GHz, and what noise levels you can put up with, etc.

Why OCUK, they are more expensive than many other suppliers and don't offer and their customer service is nothing special.

I assume I need to buy a dvd drive also, any recommendations or is it much of a muchness. One that could write DL dvds would be the only preference.

Well you dont need a dvd drive because it's possible to install windows from USB.

If you want one this will do and its a DL writer

I wouldn't bother with the h100. The 212 evo will achieve similar overclocks. As long as the case airflow is half decent 4.5ghz is an easy target.

You could put that into a 7950 or save it.

Yeah I think im gonna just go with the 212 Evo and upgrade the graphics card to the 7950 instead.

If you don't want to wait its about a tenner more on amazon after accounting for Irish VAT, but is eligible for super saver delivery. Most of the decent non Asrock alternatives probably cost about the same if not a bit more on HWVS anyway.

Any ideas how long it takes for them to usually restock items, theres a few bits missing of the spec now and no estimated delivery dates on them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,299 ✭✭✭✭BloodBath

They are usually pretty quick. A few day's normally.

I went to submit my order earlier and when I went to process it I got the following message:

Your order is high above the dispatch limit for your country. Please contect our hotline!

Anyone know what the issue is? I know some of the items I ordered arent in stock so it may be to do with that?

Also do they not take payment directly by credit card instead of through paypal? There is a cash by prepayment option - is this bank transfer?

yes axwell they only take bank transfer..their used to be an option for paypal (3%total order price surcharge)if using a gmail account, but i placed an order last week and wasnt given the option to pay by paypal..the bank transfer is usually a painless procedure..best ring them

I ordered stuff last night and the papal option worked for me :)

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 10,462 Mod ✭✭✭✭Axwell

Yeah I had the option but there is a 3% surcharge - I paid for it there by cash prepayment option and they send you their bank details after. Paid it there now through online banking and paid 12.50 for it to go through as an urgent payment so they should get the money today and start processing the order tomorrow.

Ordered my build last week and it arrived this morning - all good for the most part. Power supply didnt have a power cable with it, no biggie but should have came with one. Also didnt get any bundle with my graphics card. Anyone know if they provide this if you chase them for it?

Yeah, I got my stuff delivered on Wednesday. I had emailed them a couple of days before about the games and they sent me an attachment of a voucher through email. They gave me a 78 voucher because they were out of the 79 ones.

Free games are Tomb Raider, Bioshock infinite and Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon. You should get the same.

Powercables are only €2, if you don't have one let me know and I'll get you one from work.

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 10,462 Mod ✭✭✭✭Axwell

No I have a lead anyways thanks but it was just the fact it was missing, would be annoying if it was something else. Just to note you dont get sata cables or anything either but I knew this from reading the specs, the power lead was supposed to be included.

I rang them today about the games bundle and they are going to email me a code on Monday.

There should have been 2 sata3 cables with the mainboard.

Sorry yeah I meant additional ones. I bought 3 drives but no cables with them. Just 2 with the main board so had to get an extra one, hdmi lead, dvi to hdmi adapter and a power cable in the end.
