Just wondering if anybody saw John Deere tractor on M50 southbound at around 12.30 today. Nearly caused pile up due to low speed. While overtaking it, noticed it was been driven by a man wearing a GARDA jacket and cap. Is this some new policy or are Gardai moonlighting as farmers now?

    or driving too slowly?

    Rules of the Road:

You must progress at a speed and in a way that avoids interference with other motorway traffic.

or (more likely given the type of vehicle involved) driving up the hard shoulder?

Try telling that to all the idiots cruising at 100 in the fast lane lane :pac:

Or the even bigger idiots cruising at 80-90 in the middle lane because they think the left lane is the 'slow lane'?

Isn't the speed limit on the M50 100kmph anyway and 80kmph in places

No, it's 70mph for large parts of the M60, but there are certain sections (mainly near the M6 interchange) where it's down to 50mph due to narrow lanes.

120 all the way up to sandy ford I think, then down to 100 for a good bit, possibly back up to 120 just before the toll

    +1

My understanding is it's 100 from the M1 right the way around to after Sandyford...

Tractors are not allowed on the M50 as far as I recall so it may have been confiscated. Or else it was a stunt from someone pretending to be a Garda for a tv show, the laugh, lost a bet, a dare :D

This is correct.. it goes up to 120 only after exit 14/15. Before this up to the M1 it's all 100

This thread does explain why there's so much mayhem on this particular motorway though with the references to "fast lanes" and not even knowing what the speed limit is despite sign pointing out same every few hundred yards like!

I've seen a tractor a few times on that stretch and its seriously dangerous. You are on top of it before you know it.

A work colleague phoned Guards when a tractor on motorway nearly caused pile-up. Was told ah shure as long as he's do'n 60 he's OK. AFAIK , although some tractors can do 60kph the limit in Ireland is 50kph. Anything over 50 it has to be DOE tested, white diesel etc. Some chance of that.

You aren't allowed onto a motorway in a vehicle which can't exceed 50km/h, most modern tractors can easily do 60km/h so are legal, but there's no minimum speed limit on our motorways so legally you can do 10km/h once in the driving lane and there's nothing can be done.
