How much of it do you have, if it's only a few stalks you should be able to do so yourself. Can you put up some more information (photos also if possible) such as:

    - Surface area
    - Origin i.e. if your neighbour is also contaminated, it's pretty pointless just getting rid of it on your patch if your neighbour does nothing
    - How long has the knotweed been in place?

If you do get a gardener in to get rid of it, make sure they dispose of it correctly and don't just dump it somewhere, creating a problem elsewhere.

its for a stretch (~70m) on the bank of a stream that i want to get cleared so using chemicals are limited. I dont know how long its been there for.

I'm not from Clare, but here's a bit of information that might help: Roundup, applied neat, to a stalk cut almost to ground level is considered the best way. ANY bit left around will re-root and a few applications may be needed. You might get some info on Garden.ie, that's Gerry Daly's website.

Been dealing with a small patch-3mx3m for 10 years. Two sprays of glyphosate each year, still the occasional sprout coming up but it's not spreading.
I believe that all knotweed in these islands is a single clone, so there's a chance that its Achilles heel will soon be found.
