I am hoping to take part in a 100km cycle, the tour of Sligo on Sunday. I would like to know what should I be eating in the days leading up to the event and what quantities?.. any help gratefully appreciated.

    Regards

Novice Cyclist who's only done a few 80ks on occassion.

If you have done few 80 k then you should be fine for 100 k once your cycling a bit.
Don't change too much or try new stuff the day before or day of cycle , u could end up upsetting da tummy and you don't want deli belly on a bike :)
I keep it simple , usual porridge on the morning and same gells in back pocket as usual for later. Bananas wil usually be available on the day.

Again don't change too much and best of luck :)

Different people swear by different things, porridge, nuts or fruit works for me beforehand. During the cycle, banana, energy dring, water, jelly babies will get you around.
    Thread on this here.

Crunchy-nut corn flakes, Brown toast covered with honey and a lovely mug of tae before I leave the house.
In the wait around between sign on and start then down 2 peanut butter sandwiches and a banana and a slug of water/sports drink.
Another banana in the pocket along with 2 gels, hi-5 in the drinks bottle(s) and I'm set. If I know the route then and there's a nasty climb involved I try and down one of the gels about 10 mins before hitting that. The 2nd gel I'll try and keep for around the 80km mark. The stops on the sportives usually have the likes of bananas, lucozade sport, and maybe even mars-bars (I still believe mars bars help you work, rest & play:P)

Personally, I think a good meal the night before (without vino :)) , pasta being my choice. For breakfast on the morning I load up with porridge, raisins and honey mixed into one concoction. Maybe a banana as well before I leave the house. Plenty of water, if its a long one I'll maybe have a pint of water with a high5 tab. On the bike, try and eat little and often, bananas my favourite or fig rolls and two drink bidons, one with high5 and one with plain water.

Sans vin, agreed, but a few pints always helps (nature's sports drink): also, a bit of a hangover takes your mind off of the other pains...

Say it takes you a painfully slow 5 hours, thats about 500 calories an hour, or 2500 calories all in.

The odd mars bar and sports drink every so often on the day and that will see you right. No need to change diet, each more or "carbo load".
