i'm bringing my bike over to italy in august, plan on cycling the stelvio pass. i need to know how big a bike box is relative to the inside of a car though!! i haven't got one yet...that might lead to another post here in time.

do i need to get something as big as a golf say (or bigger?) or would something smaller such as a punto / clio be big enough for it to fit into with the back seats down? all i need free are the 2 front seats!

At least get a 4/5 door car and you might get it into the back seat. I had two bike boxes last year and neither would fit in boot of a Toyota Avensys. Got one to fit in the boot in the end but boot would not close and used ropes to keep in place. They are bigger than you think.

Depending on the airport you're flying to you might be able to leave the box in left luggage. Then practically any car will do.

Put the back seats down, bike boxes should have plenty of room in back, I've had two in the back of a skoada fabia,

Can I be Captain obvious here and state that it depends on the size of the bike box. My previous bike box was really big and rectangular and wouldn't fit in most cars even with the seats down. Needed a big taxi to get to the airport. However, the better bike boxes are relatively small and can easily fit on the back seat or in the boot with the seats down.

I took a bike to France a while ago. I was worried about my bike box fitting into a rental car so I used a cardboard bike box from a bike shop. It worked great. It was about 1/2 the width of a plastic hardcase bike box. Just be sure to throw in a roll of duct tape to reinforce the box for the trip home.

I have this box. Its pretty compact and will fit in a standard size rental car ( VW Golf/ Corolla/ Astra or equivalent). Last year 3 of us travelled with two bikes and we hired a Peugeot Partner car (not a van). Both boxes fitted in the boot.
