Any recommendations to run vmware lab on?

I was thinking of HP Micro Server but looking around, want something decent for approx €1000 or less to have and something not too big size wise, any suggestions appeciated

The issue with the N40L is that it;s capped at 8GB and 16GB when a modded BIOS but will only take certain ram.

You best option is to geta N40L fill it with 4 x 2TB hard drivers and a dual port NIC and use it as a storage point for VMWare ESXi.

Then get a mid range motherboard with eSATA and SATA6 ports.
Will it with as much ram as you can, 24GB+ and a fast SSD for your main VM's.
