Rolling contract ending in a few months - when should I get told if I'm being kept?

Well, I've been on a rolling contract in my job for the last 9 or so months. It's a newly created position, and I've been given two six month contracts. The last time I was due for renewal, I was only told two weeks beforehand that I would get another contract.

I'm more worried this time, because there's not much going on in my area right now and the company doesn't seem to be doing so well overall.

I suppose I'm going to have to start looking for a new job sharpish, but I work in a fairly niche area, so it's going to be difficult.

I was just wondering if there's any time period within which I should be told if I'll be kept on or not. I'd love to stay where I am and keep doing what I'm doing, so I don't want to jump the gun and leave if there was a possibility of staying.

The last time my contract was due to expire, I went to HR numerous times, but was told that they had to talk to x, y and z before giving me an answer, and really dragged everything out. Honestly, I think the writing's on the wall. But do I have any entitlement to find out, or is it a case of your contract's up now so goodbye and good luck? I have a horrible feeling it's the latter!
