    It's the time again...

I'm having a total brain freeze about writing cover letters. I know they should be short and to the point but they are the only chance to sell yourself.

What does a good cover letter contain?

address, TC subjects, phone number and the correct name of the school.........

I must say I don't read cover letters, I go straight for the CVs, look at the subject(s), quick look for TC number, experience. But thats only for subbing work. If its a job, I look more thoroughly but meeting the person is best.
About the correct name of the school, you would be shocked at the amount of "i would love to work in Dublin Sec School" when they are sending in to Galway....... Also don't address it to the principal unless it says to. We had a job while back and ad specifically said send applications to XXX. Yet people sent them to principal, deputy principal, Chairperson of the board..............

Thanks for that. Very helpful to have the letter reader's opinion.

And be sure you spell principal right.:o
I know of one principal who won't even consider applications that have the word spelt wrong.
    On principle!
Better still, get the up-to-date name of the principal and address it directly to her/him.

NO NO NO NO NO NO

That's my point, people tend to always send things to principals, the amount of crap on my desk. Much better if its addressed to "subbing work" etc as it goes direct to the person who needs it. May be the principal.
The amount of ads that I put the DP on the ad and some people still send it to the P. All that tells me is the person can't read.......

    Jeeeze lighten up ...
I didn't say to send it to the principal even if the ad says it should go to the DP, did I?
Just sharing what I know of principals I've come across who liked to be addressed personally as it showed that the applicant had bothered going to a tiny bit of effort.

I got one application last year addressed to the Chairperson by name...unfortunately it was to the Chairperson of the Student Council! :D
