I think that my graphics chip is gone in my 2008 Macbook Pro. The computer still comes on but the screen is blank and the external output doesn't work either. Is there anyway of getting my data off the hard drive so I can transfer it to another computer.

Have you brought the MacBook to an Apple specialist to be sure what the issue is? One option is to remove the HD yourself, OP. You can check out ifixit for the necessary tools to do so. Then you can place the HD in a new enclosure for a MacBook SATA drive and connect it via USB to another computer. They shouldn't be too expensive. :)
