    Hi All,
Talked to a fella recently who said that installing a power factor correction device at the meter could reduce bills by 5-10%, because of the power factor issue with pumps and motors (dairy farm),

Have any of you got theese installed?

I dont currently pay for bad power factor on my bill so dont see how this would save any money?

You're absolutely correct. Unless you have a separate "wattless" meter which charges you for low power factor, there are no savings to be made.

This sort of rubbish was being sold door to door a couple of years ago.

    Completely useless.

Was at a meeting there last year and a guy from moorepark was talking at it on ways to reduce your energy bills like heating water ect ect and i asked him about one of these devices as had a guy trying hard to get me to purchase one he says that they do use similar types of devices in the likes of supermarkets with all the fridges going and stuff and they cost a lot of money but they do pay because the bills are so big but the yoke the boys were trying to sell were just a gimmic and they were no good needless to say when the boys called back and i was armed withe the information they were ripping!!!

I know that power factor correction devices do reduce or eliminate reactive power consumption (measured in KVArHs, NOT KWHs, but my meter is is kilowatts not VARS, and i believe that they do nothing to reduce consumption of watts, the guy telling me about it knows this but did insist that it would reduce the bill. I called Airtricity for their take on it and hope to hear back from them tomorow.
