Spiltting files between SSD and HDD

Hi, I have a SSD 256gb, enough space but I am considering replacing the optical drive with the 1TB HDD which I have leftover after the SSD install.

I would use this to back up files and store downloads, music etc.

With regard to files such as virtual machine disk files, and often used files, would it be best for performance to keep these on the SSD?

    Thanks.

From my own experience, theres no real advantage to keeping program files on the SSD. I have all my games installed on my 7200RPM HDD and the OS on my SSD, and everything runs fine. Unless your HDD is a really old slow one, you should be fine to have all your program files on the HDD and just keep the SSD for your operating system.

Which version of windows do you have ?

Right click on the SSD and put readyboost on it and leave swap file and page file on the hard drive

ie. let the OS manage it (wear leveling and all that)

I'd have to disagree with that and say definitely keep your program files on the ssd. I've found microsoft office and the like load instantly off the ssd which is not the case for my external drive. I keep the hdd for music/video files and backups that i don't access regularly.

Yeah, well my SSD is 256gb so its not exactly small, I will keep all software and files I use regularly on it, and archive files on the HDD.

Its just virtual machine files can be quite large, and I was wondering would keeping the VM disk files on the HDD impact performance; but I will keep them on the SSD whilst I have enough space.

Downloads, and not-regularly-used files will be moved to the HDD.
