    Hi

Any suggestions for type of system or a provider? We rent an apartment currently and don't have a phone line, though the apartment is pre-wired for an alarm.

Mgt company won't let you fit external box so alarm would only ring out within apartment. Would like not to pay much so eircom phonewatch probably not a runner, plus don't want to pay for phone line.

But perhaps we could get a system that could text us when it goes off? So that plus internal ringing would be enough?

    Any advice?

Best bet would be to check out the private security authority register of licenced alarm installers.
I could recommend but I'm not going to as its a conflict of interest.
All licenced installers should be able to advise on the best system to suit your requirements.
Alternatively ask a few relatives and friends who they use! If they have good reports about the company, at least your not going in blind. While all alarm installers must be registered, some will have a better after care service than others.

Also might be worth asking mod to move to the home security forum where you'll get more info re the best system for yourself but what you're thinking off is a standard system any installer should be able to do.

If you are renting you will most likely need permission of your landlord before fitting any alarm system that is in anyway permanent. Check your lease and ask the landlord, it might be worth asking the landlord to pay for it also.

GSM diallers are very easily blocked. Good locks are probably a better investment.

    +1
I'd also replace the main entrance door- however the OP is renting- its not their own property, so this is probably a non-runner. I have a security door which latches itself into the wall with 6 arms on both sides, when you lock it. You'd come through the wall a damn sight faster than the door........

The guys over in Home Security Systems would be able to advise you on something suitable.
