me and a mate want to head to Munich for the worlds biggest pissup that is oktoberfest.flights i looked at are not to damaging on the wallet but accommodation prices are absolutely unreal, way more than we could afford! i wouldn't be against camping if need be but could we get accommodation at a more realistic price somewhere outside Munich but within striking distance of the festival?can it be done?has anyone been?

You could use sites like homelidays or airbnb to rent a house or room . I went over last year went a few friends and we went down this route and it proved to be the cheapest bar camping. Public transport is very good so if you want to stay away from the city centre for cheaper prices it's not a problem.

Try A&O Munchen Hackerbrucke or Hauptbahnhof
They are hostels, but its a decent standard and only 10 mins walk (3 hours stumble) from Theresienwiese, the place where all the action happens.

There's another chain of hostels called Meininger that aren't miles away either

‎A bit of a hint - go on a Tues to a Thurs. Its still savage.
I've been 5 times and much prefer midweek.

Weekends are beyond crazy busy. Midweek flights are cheaper, accommodation is hard to get at weekends and pricier too.
And then once you go drinking its tough to even get into the tents after about midday, you wont be served unless you have a seat at a table.

Yup, midweek is a much more sensible idea.
You could even arrive at the weekend and do sightseeing in the alps or sme other place away from Munich and then do the fest midweek. Somewhere like Nürnberg, regensburg or bamberg are good for going out (all university towns) and are lovely cities in their own right but would have accomodation at the weekend for a fraction of what you'd pay in Munich during the Oktoberfest

Accomodation wise, there's a premium camping area at the trade fair centre which might be a little more comfy.

I still wouldn't discount the idea of camping.
I had visitors over one year who refused a perfectly good place on my couch in favor of camping. Aparantly the drunken Aussie chicks are great crack in the campsite, ahem.

The main campsite are about a half hour away, and first come first served during Oktoberfest.
The hostels are €24 a night for a dorm bed. Does you budget not stretch that far?

Normally sunny during the day, can get chilly enough at night.

I don't know, staying in the city saves you taxis which are expensive. Works out better I think.
I didn't do the camping thing but my brother stayed in a big Van on the campsite and didn't sleep a wink. 24 hours of noise and messing.

And you have to be in the tents, at a table before 12:00 noon or you are shagged. Earlier if you can.
No seats, no beers, and if you have 3 seats and 8 lads you only get 3 beers.

Tip the serving girls and they will look after you, a few words of German : please, thanks, "Noch ein bier bitte" (another beer please) go a long way there. They all speak English but you will get treated as a local with some simple words & manners.

If you are planning to go back the next year book the hotel over there 12 months in advance, before you leave that's what we used to do.

Have a look on Hostels.com, or give those A&O hostels a buzz.
They have bars in them which are good for meeting people and are normally messy enough.

Enjoy man, its a great buzz.

We have a group of 4 going over and have reserved tables in a couple of the tents. Only problem is minimum booking is for 10 so have to try and get 6 more or else split the cost of 10 between 4. Anyone interested in joining our tables give me a shout. Need to pay up in the next 14 days or we lose the seats though.

    Hi

Check www.thetent .com. Extremely well run place. Kinda between camping and a hostel, could be well booked up now. Have used it a few times. Its got all your needs covered. Definately better than camping full out. nothing worse than waking up to a pounding headache, and it pissing rain. And the first thought is did the rain keep out.....
Otherwise i want to go back savage couple days and definately aim for the mid week as suggested above- its way too busy at the weekends.
