Passive standard stove

    Hi

I'm currently building a house to the passive standard and am looking for a free standing stove that won't compromise the airtightness.

I thought it would be as simple as getting a stove with an external air supply but from research it seems to be a bit more complicated.

There seems to be 2 different forms of external air connection
Indirect Air - comes in under or behind the firebox and mixes with the room air
Direct Air - connects directly to the firebox and room air is completely eliminated.

So I'm looking for recommendations for manufacturers and also how to determine if a stove uses direct or indirect air?

The ones I've been looking at so far are
Rais - Can't find an irish dealer
Morso - Can't determine the external air connection type

I got in touch with Morso to ask about room sealed stoves - the type you describe as 'direct air', i.e. completely sealed from the room. Here is their reply with a list of models, both dedicated wood burning and multifuel:

    Dear Eoghan

Your email has been forwarded to me for reply

We have a number of pure wood burning stoves with a single air intake supplying the appliance with complete combustion air which can be connected direct to outside. In addition to these we also have multi-fuel stove which if used as a wood burner only the total required air can be supplied direct.

I went with a Saey Gustav in the end myself (largely for aesthetic reasons).

    Eoghan,

Would you mind PM'ing more details about the Gustav and where you bought it/how much?

Had a quick check online and saw prices upwards of 1800 sterling.

There is a good list of partially and totally room sealed stoves here - http://www.stovesonline.co.uk/direct-air-supply-stoves.html

Quote here from another forum that got me thinking about it in the first place. The interesting part is in relation to the Morso stoves which do appear to be specified as direct air(completely room sealed) elsewhere.

"I would consider Hearthstone and Rais. They both have direct sealed outside air. You have to be careful, there are two types of outside air intakes. The most common comes in under or behind the firebox and mixes with the room air ( it is not sealed, not what you want in a Passive House) the other kind connects directly to the firebox and room air is completely eliminated. I talked to Morso and their outside air connections are not a direct sealed connection"

Have any of you ever considered using the PM facility yourselves to contact Eoghan Barra instead of cluttering the thread with "PM me" requests?
