Is there a benefit to Gaming Mice?

    Hi All,

So, after an extended stint away from PC and PC gaming, I am slowly getting back into it.

I have a PC that is a few years old, but can play most things with reasonable FPS. I am saving to build a monster in a few months time.

Currently, I'm using a Logitch MX Revolution mouse, that I got when they first came out years ago. The MX is only 800 dpi max.

I am thinking of getting a gaming mouse.

I would just like some opinions. Do you have a gaming mouse, do you notice any difference when gaming?

As long as its a decent mouse there's not really a difference. Depends if you want any of the extra features. I still use 400dpi on my 'gaming mouse' :)

i have a logitech g9x and i find the following helpful.
    1. the senstivity adjust buttons on the mouse work great on the fly, for example in bf3 in tanks etc i keeps sensitivity high to help with quick turning of turret etc, if im a sniper when i zoom in with the scope i turn the sensitivity right down so i can easily line up the head shot etc.

    2. This mouse comes with 2 profile covers, so you can pick the more comfortable one for your hand, there is a nice thumb rest area on the mouse.

    3. The cable to the mouse is braided so it never knots up of tangles up like ordinary mice.

After these features theres not much difference, i find having a good quality mouse mat to make the next biggest difference, i got a razer destuctor mat cheap and its great.

i have the g9x too and it's a wonderful mouse. on point 2.. yeah there's 2 covers but you can also use the mouse without any of the covers. it's a perfect claw grip mouse without either of the covers.

I gamed on a Revolution for a long time, and I found it a wonderful mouse. I'm using a Performance MX now (updated Revo.) and it's still excellent. The only other mouse I've tried was a RAT9, and I sold it after a few days, and stuck with my MX.

Other than the extra buttons, not really. Those extra buttons can be very useful though, especially DPI ones.

The sharkoon Drakonia is a great budget option rivalling mice twice the price.

It would be grand if it came in plain black!

This one is virtually identical. I'm not sure if it's the same company under 2 brand names but it comes in black.

I picked up a Mad Catz rat5 to see if I notice a difference. Haven't had much chance to do much gaming with it yet. But it seemed comfortable and the button layout was good, bar the thumb wheel, is a little awkward for me. But it seems to move a little better than the old one. I'll just have to give it a good gaming and see if I notice any differences.

You can see on some tests of mice that it does matter, for smoothness with no acceleration on. Mostly it just matters for the awesome buttons and glowy lights.

Yeah, I'm a sucker for those glowy lights on things :p

If I like the rat 5, I'll put a bit more aside in my build budget and get a better model.

Gaming mouse(s) is much more sensitive than other normal usage mouse. It also allows you to set the sensitivity of the mouse

I went to a college with my gaming mouse for a course, the tutor complained that my mouse was really sensitive, I couldn't stop laughing, I told him that it was a gaming mouse

Or you could tell him it was the default DPI setting. Any POS mouse can be made very sensitive as well, Windows does have built-in settings to change these things.

I'm thinking I might give the Func MS-3 or G700s a look. Both look quite interesting.

In a rush so have only read the first post. - Yes there is a huge difference, having a good mouse is so important for me. I'll be twice as efficient with my mouse and this sensitivity I have the 5 years muscle memory for, compared to a low end laser mouse. I am the sort of person who played counterstrike source with 0.245 sensitivity in game and could tell the difference between 0.25 (6 windows sens, 1800dpi@1000hz).

DPI isn't everything, and you should never set your windows sensitivity to anything over than the default, as windows mouse movements are calculated in a certain way that the default sensitivity is a ratio of 1.0, and if you set it to say 5/11, the ratio will be lower, lets say 0.8 to make this easier for my simple little head, and so you would be able to move the mouse 0.7 of a pixel's worth, without the mouse moving at all, but then when you move the mouse 0.3 of a pixel's worth thereafter, the cursor will move a whole pixel. Not a very good explanation at all back when I used to have to explain this 5 times a day when playing games I had it all sorted in my head. I'll try it again though, if the mouse movement is not at a 1:1 ratio with windows sensitivity, you can move the mouse just under the smallest amount to actually move the cursor, then when you move it a tiny tiny tiny bit, you'll get that 1 pixel jump where it has counted a full 1 pixel movement, because it was adding up the small movements. This is a huge problem if you play fps games, especially if you use a low in game sensitivity like I did.
The best thing is to get a mouse with at most 1800 dpi, anything over that and you would have to turn down windows sensitivity, and then get the highest polling rate possible as that's just the frequency of the laser checking and reporting movements.

I haven't had time to read over that but if it's terribly confusing or just doesn't make sense I'll come back later and fix it! Off to school for me now
