    Hi all,

I am moving to NZ long term in June (for 2+ years). I've been checking around for flights, and Emirates seem to have the best baggage allowance at 30kg per person. Does anybody know if any airlines offer more baggage than this for passengers in my situation? Thanks!!!!!

BA are pretty good - the base allowance is only 23kg, but they have a very generous carry-on allowance (23kg) and charge reasonable fees for additional bags.

But if you book a flight on BA.com and they use an Aer Lingus plane from Cork are you allowed to bring 23kg on the Aer Lingus segment in your hand luggage?

Hi, I'm not sure about the flight baggage allowances but I am sending luggage ahead with An Post. Its working out at €85 for 20kg.
We're heading out at the end of May. x

Good point. The answer is no - the operating airline always decides the hand luggage allowance. The BA hand luggage allowance will only be valid on BA operated flights.

Both Etihad and Malaysian Airlines offer 30kgs to economy passengers now also.

If you fly through the US, your baggage may become subject to US piece rules rather than the usual weight concept.

Thanks for all the replies folks. I think sending some stuff on ahead might be the best option. Then ship the rest over sea. I found Eremites and Air NZ had deals a few years ago of up to 50kgs if you had an unstamped visa of more than 1 year. I've tried calling them both but didn't get through to anybody. I've emailed them so I'll let you guys know what comes back.

30Kgs is quite a load anyway, remember you have to lug it around for a while as well. 23Kg is a lot for hand luggage and you will have to carry that with you on any stopovers which will not be pleasant after a long flight and making your way through a busy airport.

    Hello OP.

No carry on luggagee is ever 23kg!! I really hope you haven't believed that..made me smile though!!

As was said Emirates or Malaysian is best for economy checked luggage at 30kg. Will you really need more?? If travelling as a family kids over 12 will get the same baggage allowance. Even though their service has slipped Emirates are good value when you factor in time in the air and stop overs.

NZ is a great spot to live, spent 2 years in CHC so pm me if you want more info for the south island.

I was thinking 23kg didn't sound's right but I thought somebody knew more than me about it. If the kid is over 2 you get the same baggage allowance as an adult with emirates. 37kg all in. That's a lot of stuff op. You basically only need clothes to get you started anyway.

Hand Luggage is restricted in size, this is the real restriction rather than weight, unless you are carrying Gold bullion.

That is a huge hand baggage allowance. We had bother trying to drag our 7kg bags down through the plane and then get them up into the overhead storage. Good luck to anybody doing that with 25kg.
