Recently, a Polish friend of mine explained some of the strategies local communities used to survive the harshness of life under the pre 1989 communist regime. It seems to me that in the event of a real economic depression here in Ireland we would not have the know how or the resourcefulness to deal with the consequences of such an eventuality. People from eastern Europe however may be able to bring their experience of communism to help the Irish to survive.

So why is this scenario something we should envisage? Firstly, we have lost much of our manufacturing to China a decade ago. Secondly, we have lost most of our traditional cottage and craft industries a generation ago. Simply put, we no longer know how to take care of ourselves.

Of course, none of this would matter if the government is right and the plan of growing our way out of recession works. However, for the Irish economy to grow the rest of the worlds economy must improve. What if it doesn`t? Many economists are prediction that the global depression we were supposed to have in 2008 will still happen in the near future and it will come with a vengeance because of all the money that was borrowed in a desperate bid to avoid the inevitable.

Here are a few links to documentaries which advance this theory:

I would be interested in hearing the views of others with regard to my own "disaster pending" theory and also the probability that we will need to draw on the experience of the new Irish to whether an economic depression - particularly those from eastern Europe.

    MOD MOVING COMMENT:
This OP did not discuss in any detail a political theory, but did have content more appropriate for discussion in Irish Economy.
