Rent allowance for Back to Education program

Friend got course and was told by FAS he will now be not claiming Jobseeksers but back to education program same amount just under different name.

He wants to move to Cork to be near the course. Can he claim rent allowance for this?

Keeping your secondary benefits

If you qualify for the Back to Education Allowance, you can keep your entitlement to any secondary benefits you already have, for example, Fuel Allowance, Rent Supplement and Mortgage Interest Supplement. However, any increase in income may affect your entitlement to Rent or Mortgage Interest Supplement or the amount of supplement you get. For example, this can happen if you have additional income from part-time work.

It looks like he can claim for rent allowance.

Fas courses have accommodation allowances for those who have to temporarily move to do the course.

To get Rent Supplement your friend would have to meet all the qualifying criteria such as renting privately for at least 6 months already, having been able to afford the rent at the start and having suffered a financial downturn since, and also being accepted by the local authority as being in need of social housing.
