Wing mirror glass fell off

Driving home on motorway today and noticed the driver side wing mirror glass was wobbling all over the place. Pulled in, to try push it back on, the whole mirror came off in my hand (intact) .
Is is just a matter of super gluing this back on?
    They are heated wing mirrors.
    It's a 2007 golf.
Any help much appreciated, I need the car for tomorrow morning :(
    Will try attach a photo

    Thaks

You'd be better off with double sided tape rather than gluing it back on, but I'm not sure what the heated wing mirrors look like at the glass part?

Also, you can drive the car without a wing mirror, just be a lot more careful.

If the glass is intact you can just glue it on with decent glue the heated part should still work.

When it happens me I used some silicone.
    Rock solid since

Looks like the mirror was attached to some sort of double sided film then put in wing, no clip or suckers !! Then again I know nothing about cars, so probably talking rubbish:)

Something wrong there. You can buy the mirror glass with the backing for your car, not too dear, maybe €30. It clips back in the way it should. No messing around with glue. They have the heated elements as well.

Wonder should I try glue it on just to get me through tomorrow (have to drive to newry) then maybe pop into halfords or something to get a proper one?
Or would that just make it worse?

The adhesive on mine had just deteriorate over time, and on a hot day just popped off.
Nothing wrong with a replacement, but my fix was free =D
    Heating element is unaffected too.

Was the mirror heating .I though it should have an element in connected by wires, otherwise if it is glued to that surface in pic, perhaps tha surface heats up, so a special glue is probably needed, I am unfamiliar with the golf mirror

This shows how it should be fitted back on a working mirror.

I had it turned on to heating, forgot to turn it off after bad weather.
Just got some superglue from petrol station (didn't think my false nail glue was going to cut it :) ) it seems to be holding for now, will do as a temporary fix.

Will keep an eye in it
    Thanks for all your help

Ah crap- just seeing your video now!!

Having looked at that youtube video, your mirror has come away from the piece that heats up super glue should be ok if enough of it was used

This shows also replacing the frame the glass sits on. Does the whole frame+glass have to be replaced if just the glass falls away?

Honestly don't know right now, I just searched for replacing mirror glass to see if it might help op, I'm an amateur to be honest.

Good luck with it anyway dublingirl.

If the glass falls away and breaks vw will probably ask you to buy the full piece at great cost, but if the glass is still good then just glue it back, simples

Thanks again for all the help.

If the glass has come away relatively cleanly,
superglue silicone double sided tape are all fine.
A caveat about the tape, depending on the thickness, the heating performance may be reduced.
Less so if the glass is pressed against the holder.

I'd just keep an eye on it over the next while to see how it holds up.

Should it fall out again and break, halfords should have just the glass replacement cheap enough

You can buy the glass separate in top parts with the heating line about 30 euro or so. Happened to my dads octavia a few months ago same mirror. The glass fell of and broke. He got the new one and they sell a glue in there for sticking it hasn't come loose since and it still heats fine. I wouldn't be bothered with silicone and pads tbh. A decent glue will do the job.

This happened to me a few weeks ago. I used 5 small spots of tec 7. Dunno yet how it'll work with the mirror heater tho.

Tec 7 would be better than silicone anyway and it will hold the mirror well its just whether or not it affects the mirror heater.

Exact same happened me about a year ago, Mk V Golf as well.
It was flapping about and came off in my hand when I took a closer look. I posted on here about it.

I ended up getting some araldite glue, (a really strong glue avail from halfords or hardware stores) then removed the heated backing plate by using tilt switch to get a screwdriver under the mirror and pop it out like in that video.

Then cleaned the mirror and bonded it in place on my table with a towel under mirror and some weight on it. Works fine now and heats as well as before.
This might depend on how well the glue was spread out.

I think it's a flaw really, don't think they should come off ever, even when heater is left on. Thankfully they seem to hang on just long enough to be saved from falling to the ground. !!!

We use araldite for putting kayak paddles together, It goes soft with heat!! You mirror may fall off again, be careful.

With regard to replacement mirror glass, there are 2 types, the stick on cheap type, that I have seen in Halfords, these are not available with heating element, I have sold these before and TBH, they are good for a short term fix, very few last a long time. The other type, as pointed out available in Top Parts and many motor factors around the country, is the mirror glass with the backing "frame". These have the heating elements and are made by the people who also make the door mirrors for the various manufactures. They would be more fiddly to fit, but they will last. These may be more expensive than the Halford type, but they are far cheaper than a new mirror.

I double checked the price on the "proper" one and they would retail around €20 - €23
