Thinking of buying a motor in uk just wondering can I use my aib visa debit card to pay for a car if I notify my branch first. Really don't want to bring cash or wait for a draft to clear as would like to travel over and back on the same day thanks

Not many places in UK will accept Visa Debit. Check before you travel.

Clear it with your bank aswell first. Theres a limit on most of 2500 when you go abroad. Thats €2500 so exchange rates come into effect aswell

Considering visa debit is what every bank in the uk provides to every current account holder that is completely wrong

Maybe I'm thinking of the old Laser card? I know when I tried to use it in the UK, it wasn't accepted.

The dealer may impose a surcharge for all card transactions, or for non-UK debit card transactions.

Visa Debit is much more widely available in the UK than Ireland and is very commonly used to buy cars in dealerships - many more will acccept Visa Debit who will not accept credit cards.

OP: Unless you are spending a trivial amount on the purchase, it is likely that a foreign debit card will not attract a particularly good exchange rate. Have a read of the Importing a Car from the UK threads - you'll find lots of useful posts re different methods of payment and online currency purchase.

Do bank drafts need to clear? I'd have thought that they can verify the draft by phoning the bank? Easiest would be to first ring the dealer and ask do they accept and then ring your bank to make sure there'll be no limit. You'll probably end up paying a surcharge of af a couple of % though on the exchange rate so it'll cost you an extra couple of hundred quid.

Also the dealer is less likely to give you as much of a discount as with cash so it could end up making the purchase around £500 more for you at an estimate. I think the rate is generally around 1% of the transaction they'd have to incur for accepting it.

It will work however the exchange rate you receive will wont be as good as if you shopped around + depending on who your card is with they may charge a foreign currency fee.

You can't haggle with a bankers draft, when you get to see the car in the metal.

It will still be treated like a cheque and will have to be cleared. Won't take as long, but you won't be able to take car until bank clears draft.

if the car is £11k, bring a draft for £10k and pay the rest (if any) with credit/debit card :D

Why not do a bank transfer? Get the bank details from the dealer, including the IBAN, and it should be fine.

Not true. Visa Debit is internationally accepted.

Not quite true. VISA is, but VISA DEBIT not so much.
One is a credit card, the other is a debit card.

Drafts are practically dead in the UK and wouldn't be that attractive to a dealer. Frankly, a bank transfer would more likely get the car released faster.

I know the difference, and I stand by what I said. Where you see the Visa sign, the card will be accepted. I've used Irish & UK cards here as well as in the UK and beyond. Never had a problem.

I agree, that's how it should be. But, I've tried to use DEBIT where the VISA sign is online, and quite often they won't accept VISA DEBIT. The annoying bit is, they don't even give a reason. Go figure..

Im pretty sure that if a system accepts Visa cards then it doesnt know the difference. Certainly Ive never had any issues using a Visa debit card where Visa payments are accepted. The only issue might be with the limit imposed by the bank.

I'm unlucky too! There is a difference between Debit and Credit cards and only large organisations will accept Visa Debit. Went to buy petrol last week in the UK and the local filling station wouldn't accept the debit card.
As for Bank Drafts, went to buy a car there a few years ago with an Irish bank draft (in Sterling made out to the garage) and it was turned down.

Did they try it in their system or did they hear Irish debit card and decide that they werent going to accept it?

A lot of UK dealers won't accept sterling bank drafts, never mind foreign ones! I've always paid for my cars via bank transfer when I lived in London. Deposit paid via Switch, the rest by transfer. The only time I've ever paid for a car via draft was here!

A bank transfer would take a couple of days to go through though wouldn't it from an Irish bank?

Yes, I think it takes 24 hours to appear.

They tried it and it was not accepted. Nothing to do with nationality!
