My birthday is coming up and I told my partner that i really want scratch cards, the 1 euro ones for my birthday. We have a budget of around 30euro I said get me 15 and a card. He said no, that it's not an inappropriate gift and that I have an addiction. He thinks i'm addicted to scratchcards. because last week I was only meant to buy 5, one euro cards but i bought 14. I haven't bought any since. We have a joint bank account. He has asked me severely time what I want for my birthday and I said scratchcards. Should I be allowed scratchcards or not?
By the way we always tell each other what we want for birthdays and xmas etc so we don't get gifts we don't like. We agreed that we should buy ten scratch cards a week and we scratch five each but i scratched his 5. When we are at the store that sells them and i'm feeling lucky I like to buy one but he always says no. That's fine. I don't smoke or drink and I feel i should be allowed some sort of enjoyment? We have a budget for each week so we really can't spend more than 10 a week and also we haven't bought any this week because i was hoping to get the 15 for my birthday.

Hi OP, of course you are entitled to spend your money as you see fit, but it looks like your boyfriend is genuinely concerned about the scratch cards. They can spiral and become an addiction for some people. Have you thought that maybe you are a little obsessed with them?
Could you stop buying them completely for a month just to test if you could go without?
It sounds like your boyfriend doesn't want you developing a gambling addiction and has your best interests in mind. Maybe give some thought to prove to yourself and him that you can actually take or leave than.

OP your boyfriend thinks you're addicted to scratchcards. Surely the question that comes after that shouldn't be "can I have scratchcards for my birthday?".

You're buying 10 a week already. That's more than enough. If you're really not addicted, you should stop altogether for a while.

Your b/f probably wants to buy you something nicer than scratchcards, something you can keep and be sentimental about, not something you throw away once you have scratched it. He probably feels, as I would, that a scratchcard is not a proper gift.

OP look at the bits in bold, you may not have an addiction but you to appear to have an unhealthy relationship with them. If you replace the word scratchcard with pint how would it look. I meant to drink 5 pint but drank 14. We bought 10 pints, 5 each but I drank his. Each time I pass a pub I have a pint.
