Worn sump.

Last service, I was told the sump would need replacing at the next service as it was worn.
Had the same problem on a previous car with the same main dealer. That time they clarified that the sump plug thread was worn. The oil had been changed, always by them, only five times!
    five
How can a sump plug thread wear in this short time. Just wondering if anyone else has ever had this with a relatively new car.

    thanks

Looks like they have been over tightening the sump plug. How new is the car and has it always been serviced by the same dealer?

I've never had this problem with any car. Then again I only use a socket wrench and not anything stronger.
It seems they create work for themselves.

Sounds like someone has cross threaded it at some stage. I'd be asking to see the sump plug. No way should it be like that after 5 times.

Just get the sump hole helicoiled. I'd imagine it would be a lot cheaper than a whole sump cover.

Yeah iv serviced 30 year old cars never heard such bull either some monkey cross threaded it or had the wrong torque setting. If it needs to be done it needs to be done but don't pay them its their fault inspect the plug thread their designed to out last the car. If they done all the servicing they must pay. some mechanics just add their mistakes to your bill and get away with it and charge for mis diagnoses for faults that haven't been rectified. Only trade where you pay for a service you probably didn't receive.

Thanks. It is Skoda Octavia. Dealer is main dealer and also carries other . I contacted VW Ireland but they refused to put me through to a service manager.

On the first car I refused to pay as they had done all the service. In this case they are warning me in advance. On one occasion the car was serviced by another company so they can probably say it was done there.

Certainly it has put me off using them for either service or for purchasing from them or VW group again
    thanks again

It happens a lot of VAG cars. Steel plug and aluminum sump aren't a great match.

As chippy says, just get a helicoil fitted. It's a steel insert that's put into the sump and it's a permanent fix.

Is a HeliCoil OK in this situation? You need to retap the thread to take the Heli-Coil and how can you be sure none of the swarf ends up on the inside of the sump? If you need to take the sump off to HeliCoil it how much more expensive is it going to be just to replace the sump?

Regardless of the cast aluminum sump and steel plug its would never be an issue if the mechanic was anyway competent surely a dealer technicians are more aware of the steel plug aluminum sump. Hound vw for an answer and mention its not the first time plus how do they no its needing replacement an oil change away. Plus if its being heli coiled make sure they do it right empty sump then purge it will cheap or used oil after its threaded.

I'd put in a Fumoto Valve rather then a new sump.
Those VAG alloy sumps with the steel bolt are a disaster, they all do it eventually even with the bolt torqued correctly.
    Its a known issue.

It will have to come off to be helicoiled. New normal non genuine sump can be had for around 70. If I was replacing it I would replace it with a steel bottomed one
