I went to look at a car this morning, it is priced keenly and ticks all the boxes. It is 2006, was imported from the UK in 2009 and had 81000 miles on it. It currently has 130,000 miles on the clock. The car is in the 4k region and the trader who is selling it seems to specialise in ex-fleet type cars.

It has no recent service history but everything looks and sounds ok (albeit in my not very experienced opinion). There is no warranty offered - apparently he doesn't offer warranties on any car over 5 years old.

I guess my question is if I got a mechanic to give it the once over and he gave the all clear, and got a motorcheck report which turned out ok, is this enough to mitigate the fact that it has no service history?

What kind of car is it?

It's up to you. A mech can see obvious faults but not see everything.

This is just a cheap way of saying "I don't stand over cars I sell, in case they break down."

4k is a lot but not a massive amount. If you think it's worth it go for it.

This is what I was thinking. Its an Astra btw

I have to pick between this car and a Peugeot which has just had its engine replaced. Its a 2005 with 150,000mls on the clock but has a second hand engine just installed which only has 70,000mls on it (apparently). The timing belt and a few other engine parts are brand new, and they are also offering a warranty - I'm leaning towards this car atm

I wouldn't be buying any car from a dealer who will not willing to stand over it.

I'd agree with that but many dealers are going this way especially on older vehicles. Provided it checks out with a decent mech, a 1 or 3 month warranty is no warranty at all in the grand scheme of things. An issue likely to show up after a week should probably have been spotted in an initial check. A bigger issue might not show until much further down the line where the warranty will have expired anyway. Catch 22.

Just wondering where you're picking up that Peugeot? I had a 307 which died and the mechanic in Kildare bought it off me, telling me it'd need a new engine. It had 150,000 on it when it died. What colour is it?

I thought dealer had to provide some level of warranty under sales of good act and that the goods must be of merchantable quality and fit for purpose?
    Unless its a trade sale?

It is a blue 307 from a trader from Kildare. This is a bit random. Is there anything I should know before i purchase?

I bought an old avensis for about 3K a year ago and got a warranty - if I wasnt going to get a warranty I wasnt going to buy the car. If the lad thinks what he is selling is of good quality he shouldnt have a problem in giving a warranty

How much of the dealers stock is over five years old..? Does he actually give a warranty on anything..?
