Buying ex-council house...

    Hi guys,

I'm currently in the process of buying an ex-council house. Mortgage approved, solicitors help gained etc.

Now we have a form to fill out for the council to review.
My main worry is about this form that we have to fill out. Is it like a vetting form to see if we have other council locations etc? I thought this would be a private sale, but of course I have found out that the council has some entitlement as to who the vendor can now sell it on to.

If I was to sell the house in about 10 years, would then next buyers have to go through this too? It just seems like the house has an unclean title now that both the vendor and the council are attached to it.

If I go ahead and buy it, will I need the councils permission to sell it?

    Cheers :)

No, the people you are buying off got a discount for buying the property from the Council. There are safeguards in place to ensure they don't then sell it off to a developer, their cousin etc. So for the first sale (I think if it's within 20 years) has conditions attached, and they need the consent of the council. You are entering into a private sale though, and will not have any such conditions attached.

I see, I had a feeling that was the case. My OH thought differently, thanks for that.

    Hi,
I too am in the process of buying an ex-council house and was told that I have to make a declaration that I am a first time buyer. Sorry that I don't have more information than this, but maybe my queries are of relevance to you.
I understand that the person who originally buys the house from the council also has other restrictions on it as well - eg. they can't rent it out, or they can't buy a second property. Is this correct? Also, will the same restrictions apply to me and you? Will we also have to get council approval for our sale to the next buyer?
    Thanks and all best!
