Best method of retaining patio.

Hi folks. I'm putting down a patio which is 5m x 3m. I plan to step it in from the fence by 0.5m to leave room for a flower bed so for simplicity sake imagine it is a rectangle which has to be retained on 3 sides like a U. I was thinking of putting kerb slabs around it, concrete them in and finish them flush with the slabs. I'm wondering if there is a better method. Have people tried those custom retainers and how do ye fine them. Are they strong, cost much, and so they stay in place in the long term. I would like to use sleepers on the side with the bed but don't want to use an old cresoted one as the kids would be sitting on it but I'm afraid if I buy the newer ones that they'll rot in a few years.
    Any tips anyone?
    TIA.
