Windows XP Password

I have been given an old dell 170L Optiplex by a friend of mine - It is an ex office pc from her job.
My problem its that windows has a lock on it (CTRL+ALT+DLT together on windows start up screen to enter login credentials)

Its there anyway to bypass or disable the password request without having to ask my friend to request her IT department search for the credentials?

Thanks Sugarman - Have tried cmos battery to no avail.
Can you explain hirensboot to me if you dont mind as I am not at well familiar with it

just to clarify it its a desktop pc, not a laptop

Why not install a linux distro on it. I'm using xubuntu which can be got at http://xubuntu.org/getxubuntu/ , but the instructions leave a lot to be desired.

The instructions here for the full ubuntu install are much better, http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/install-desktop-latest.

I'd suggest you create a live USB and try it out on the machine to see that it will work ok, if everything works you should give it a try.
