    Hi all,
Brought the mini to the NCT yesterday and one of the things it failed on was no chassis/vin number. I do have them, but they are in a box, as the car was restored and they were never put back on. I was given a form that I need to bring to a Garda station for them to verify the details? Can anyone shed some light on how the process works?

    Thanks

bring the form to the garda station, they check that the car is not stolen/have no reason to believe the car is not the car its meant to be, they stamp the form etc, bring it back to nct , they hold onto a copy of the form, you keep the form for future tests and you get your pass cert if that's all it failed on.

If he has the vin plates in his hand how do they know its not stolen? Seems a handy way to make a stolen car legit. Or am I missing something? Get a car thats only fit for scrap and liberate the chassis number. Bring stolen car to gards minus the chassis number and get them to verify the stolen one is the scrapped one then attach plates. Youve now got a clean car.

if the car has a chassis number stamped onto the body its going to look suspicious if the number is missing so I'm not sure the guards would sign the form. unless its a pug 206. id be suspicious of a car coming in wit the chassis number liberated. im not familiar with the mini chassis number location so cant comment on that one exactly.

Im assuming by wording in the op that the mini uses an old style plate. One that rivets or screws to the chassis maybe?

yeah im assuming that, I don't know if its stamped to the body but if it was, and it was missing id assume it was stolen.

Thanks for the replies. It uses riveted plates and they either go on the slam panel or on the inside of the wing. Unfortunately, they're two of the most rust prone areas. When the restoration was done, these were kept it. I would be happy to reattach the plates, but there's nowhere to put them, or any means to reattach.

Back where they came from: 4mm drill and 2 x rivets - now it IS restored ! :)

What happened to the VIN stamped into the driver's side of the scuttle panel?

Every panel was replaced as it was a Cat C crash and full restore!

Then simply stamp the VIN onto the scuttle where it should be, like whoever did the repairs should have done.
