Nissan Almera problem - any ideas?

    Hi all,
I've a 01 Nissan Almera 1.4L Petrol. Has just under 100k on the clock. Bought it back in Feb.

I had a new battery put in but since then I've found on occasion while driving that the car loses power, power steering goes and I have to pull in. When I restart the car it goes fine. This has happened about 3 times over a couple of months.
Occasionally when I start the car it seems to take a minute for the engine to catch. As in, the car turns over but it seems to take a few seconds for the engine to kick in. Again, this doesn't happen all the time, not even once a week.

This morning, after the car had been idle for the weekend, I tried to start it. Again, the engine is turning over, lights are working etc, but the engine isn't catching. Tried it a few times but didn't want to wear the battery down by turning it over and over so I left it.

I'm a bit clueless about cars so I'm just wondering if there is anything obvious I need to do before I go calling a mechanic?

Any engine management light on. I think that some of these of that era suffered from camshaft and crankshaft sensor problems. These would give hard to start and cutting out problems.

could be these - oxygen sensor, timing chain, also gave trouble on these. I had one and it broke my heart fixing it.
