Using a private car port space to build a shed?

Maybe a bit of a strange question here. I have a private car parking space that came with the house. The space in question is surrounded by walls, one of which is my own and backs on to my garden with the other two walls backing on to neighbours gardens. My question is this, how feasable is it to think I can close this space off and put a roof on top and turn it into a usable and secure room/space? I've attached a picture to give an idea of what it is I am looking at. Thanks in advance! :)

its quite possible building over this car parking space would require planning permission if it contravened a previous planing condition. Its also quite possible this permission would be refused if the current car parking standards for your dwelling were reduced.

Hi - Thanks for the reply. The house itself is in one of the newer built estates in co dublin. No changes have ever been made to the house or planning permission of any kind sought. Is it a case that the housing estate has a minimum requirement for parking spaces? For example, every house must have at least one designated space?

    Thanks again!

Yes, there will be minimum standards for car parking to be met. Youd have to check your particular Area Development Plan for the specific info.

I would advise you to apply for a preplanning meeting with your local planning authority and put your suggestion to them. they will highlight all prospective issues up, and may give you an indication as to how an application would be viewed.

Thanks for the excellent advice, I am now a little less clueless about what to do! :D

you'll have to forgive me not really understanding the little sketch.

it looks like the neighbours might have a right of way through the 'parking space'??

if so - problem. if not - no problem.

is this space round the back of the development? or does it just happen to be a small corner that got 'left over' or was it designed in?

i'd agree with the lads above - talk to the planners. bring as much info with you - site plan, dwgs, all you have to give them the full story.

they may just turn round and say ya that'll be grand and off you go with a planning application.

talk to the neighbours aswell - if there is a possibility one of them will object - my opinion would be - dont even consider the application as there will be bad blood for years.

    good luck
