Now that we're well into the season any thoughts from those who availed of the amnesty to upgrade a category.

Was it what you expected ?

In hindsight should you have stayed put or are you glad you upgraded ?

    I took the upgrade.

I raced at A4 from July onward last year, found myself relatively comfortable over the distances we raced, but didn't really know what I was doing, and didn't have the nerve to sprint. I had no points come the end of the year, but wanted to improve on what I'd learned to date.

I'm of the belief that if you want to get better at something, you mix yourself with people that are better than you, so I took the upgrade.

I put a decent winter in, and was competitive enough earlier on, again no points to show for it, but well able to pull my weight over the increased race distances, and always learning what my strengths and weaknesses are, and how to play to them. Still learning from those more experienced. Raced my first A2/3 stage race in Connemara, finished 28th overall following a 1 minute penalty for missing my TT slot. Suffered a bit in the hillier races after this, but finding my legs again.

Is it a step up from A4, most definitely. Do I regret it, probably could have gotten a few placings at A4 by now, who knows, but if I didn't it could be a long season of chasing points to get up, I've definitely come on in strength, fitness and ability since the first A3 race though. Overall I'm glad I took it.

    +1

Went A3->A2, I can handle A2 pace at the front of the bunch but haven't mastered the increased distance yet, still think I made the right decision

A4 -> A3 bit of a shock to the system for me even though I'm fitter than last year. Upgraded because A4 races are short and hard to justify the drive time. Four races

    - Two in/near Loughrea were handicapped, finished with the main bunches, was happy with that and glad to be in the A3 race on these days

    - Broadford, Limerick. Pulled out after 4 of the 6 laps, pace was too high on that hill for me. Would have been happier to be an A4 with 3 laps in this race.

    - Nenagh, couldn't stay with the front group on the second hill but was in a smaller group further back. Group followed the wrong race arrow in Nenagh and pulled out. Did the A4 last year and while last year could move freely around the peloton this year was just about hanging on. Difference felt massive in this race.

Next weekend Corkman, think if I were doing the A4 I'd be looking forward to it a lot more. As it is expecting something similar to Nenagh.

Reckon if I was Dublin based, would be coping a bit better, races so far either handicapped or junior flooded
