Hardcore base for a garden shed

I'm going to be adding a new garden shed and as it's heavy I'll require a solid foundation. The shed is 12' x 6'.

I was going to go with a cement slab, but the quotes I was getting for this were pretty expensive, so I think I could get away with putting the shed on hardcore that I could lay myself.

The base of the shed is pressure-treated and damp-proof, so the plan would be to dig 6 inches and fill with hardcore, then stamp it down to get it flat as possible. I was told to get about 2 tons of hardcore to fill the area I want to cover (15.5' x 7' in total).

The soil on the proposed site is pretty damp and loose. Reckon this is enough hardcore to avoid the shed sinking into the ground or is concrete the only way to go?

I think that's probably a structural question, and we can't comment structual queries (forum charter). But if hardcore was to be used, you'd have to use closer to 3 ton for that area.

As a structural engineer...this frightens me..

    Hi mrcheez
That shed would be heavy. Take out soil to about 200mm. <SNIP>

Mod note: You should know better by now - no structural details to be discussed. Warning given.

ok so consensus is that I'll need to use cement at some point? Cheers!

What are the risks of putting the shed on hardcore alone?

As per the forum charter we are not going to discuss anything of a structural nature.

    Thread closed.
