Any current serving fire fighters on here?
Can you explain the rota system?

Ie. what's a typical shift pattern etc?

    Thanks.

    Hey

That would entirely depend on where in the country you are, and whether the station is retained (on pager) or full time.

Given that your location is North Dublin the full time DFB firefighters have a 4 watch system with 2 shifts. The day shift is 9-6 and the night shift is 6pm-9am. Each person is rostered to 7 days and 7 nights across a 28 day period. I think it works out at roughly 3 on 3 off

Depending on the station and numbers would determine what days/nights are on the ambulance/truck

    Hope that helps

    28 day roster.
    7 days and 7 nights
1 day and 1 night for each day of the week
    9 hour day......9am to 6pm
    15 hour night....6pm to 9am

Mon Tues Weds Thurs Fri Sat Sun

    Week 1 D N R R R D D

    Week 2 N R R R D N N

    Week 3 R R D D N R R

    Week 4 R D N N R R R

    D.......Days N........nights R..........rest

You will work two weekends out of every 4........one of days one of nights
The third weekend you will finish Saturday morning and the fourth you will be off fully.

Roster constantly rolls over. If it falls on Xmas or Bank Holiday...........tough. It doesn't matter if you've worked the previous 3 Xmas's.

Can someone tell me if these shifts are actually better than ordinary job ones? Like you get 3 days of rest every weekend, it sounds great! Also, is it true that full time Fire Fighters sleep in their HQ during the night time? (Of course after the gear is checked and there is no calls)

If you read the roster properly you will see that there is only 2 weekends where you have rest days and even one of those you dont finish until saturday morning, Day shifts are 9 hours long and Night shifts are 15 hours long, also training is done at night

How would you normally be rotated for ambulance duties ect? Say for example in the likes of dolphins barn where you have the 2 pumps an ET and ambulance, is there a set amount of days per month on each appliance? Also do AP's do any additional ambulance shifts as opposed to other vehicles or are they on the same roster as everyone else?
