If I preorder a brand new book from amazon, will it be a first edition?

This might seem like a stupid question and a no-brainer yes but I dont know much about the subject and just want to be sure.
    Thanks

I would doubt it very much.

It might be part of an early print run but is very unlikely to be a first edition.

Thanks, so can you generally buy first edition book from a retailer at all or do you need contacts in the industry? (not including ebay).

First editions would be fairly common in the bookshops if it's a couple of days after it has been released and it hasn't sold out the initial run that the bookshop ordered.

The only problem is that some publishers have different ways of making it clear that a book is a first edition. The most common one nowadays is the full run of numbers (usually to 10) on page immediately following the title information.
