Thinking of heading to california for 3 weeks in the middle of Sept.

Is that a good time of the year to travel or are there better times to go?

    Thanks,

Better in what way? Better prices on air fare? Better weather? Better things to do/see in September vs other times of the year?

California is also a very, very big state. It is nearly 1000 miles from north to south. What part of it are you planning on going to?

    Your post is very vague.

I was referring to the weather. My thinking was, if the weather was mixed, then perhaps it might not be the best time to travel.

As regards north or south, I was thinking of the northern part of Cal

Weather should be fine that time of year. If you are going to Northern California, you won't have to worry about The Santa Ana winds & seasonal brush fires that can affect the LA area, and the Baja peninsula in general. The San Francisco area can get very over cast and chilly when heavy fogs sweep in from the bay, but that's a year 'round thing really & not specific to September.
