Monitor White/White Lines during bootup

Hi. I have an Inspiron 1525. I plugged my television into the HDMI port as I have done before and nothing happened, laptop didn't recognise it, television didn't display anything it was as if I had plugged nothing in.

So I disconnected it and restarted the laptop. Now there is only white screen during bootup and I get no picture (monitor stays white) until I get to Windows desktop.

Strange thing is, if I plug the HDMI in I get picture fine from bios/turn on but nothing on television anyway.
Now the only way I can access BIOS is with the HDMI plugged into the TV which ,otherwise, doesn't appear to make any difference. Laptop still won't detect my TV, I tried using the same HDMI port/cable as the UPC box which is working fine on the telly.

    Any ideas? Thanks.
