you'll have a great time, we've been going to albufeira every year for 8 years now.

below is an extract from my advert on trip advisor....just a bit of information on the area...

There are opportunities to enjoy all water sports, golf and horse riding.

The Zoo marine sea life centre is close by, together with a large Waterpark, Slide and Splash and the huge Algarve Shopping Centre to satisfy any 'Retail Therapy' needs! If you want to get away from the coast for the day then a drive to Monchique and Foia (the highest point of the Algarve) is highly recommended. On the way you could visit the castle in Silves and stop for lunch of chicken Piri-Piri in the small mountain town of Monchique. It will take you less than an hour to get there.

Two large shopping centres are 'Algarve Shopping' in Guia and 'The Forum' in Faro just 20-30 minutes by car. The Algarve Shopping is a large mall which is approx. 5 minutes drive away. Taxi costs from Albufeira 10euros each way. Here you will find a variety of shops, a big supermarket, a bowling alley, a multi-screen cinema (most films are in English with Portuguese sub titles) and a food hall.

Alternative ways of exploring the Algarve are by joining one of the many jeeps that head out each day (high season) to explore the unspoilt Algarve.

There are plenty of great boat trips leaving from Albufeira every day. You can choose from a full or a half day and this can often include a trip into the caves and grottoes of the beautiful Algarvian coast line. If you fancy a drive into Spain then the border is only a 50 minute drive and Seville approx two hours depending on traffic.

As the Algarve spans a large area with wonderful sights and attractions, car hire is highly recommended to explore, but not essential as Solario is located a few minutes walk to the center of Albufeira.

Many award winning golf courses (http://www.algarve-golf.com/)
    Zoomarine (http://www.zoomarine.com/)
    Aqualand (http://www.aqualand.pt/)
    Slide and Splash (http://www.slidesplash.com/)

    Jeep Safari (http://www.portitours.pt/)
    Krazy world (http://www.krazyworld.com/)
    Dolphin Safari (http://www.dolphinseafaris.com/)
Scuba diving (5* PADI IDC Centre) (http://www.dive-time.net/)
    Atlantic Park
    Coastline Cruise
    Water sports
    Jet ski-ing
    Parasailing
    Snorkelling
    Kayaking
    Sailing
Horse riding over the sand dunes
    Big game & Reef fishing
Day trips round the Algarve and surrounding regions

how much are boat trips?,i sent e mails to a company out ther got no reply!!

the prices are very varied and up for negotiation...hence no prices on the websites

you can pay anything from 10euros to 50euros depending on the duration of the boat trip

try Benegil beach and hop on one of the boats there for a trip round the best coastline in Europe think it was 10 to 20 euros each

you'll have a wonderful time, vilamoura is fab :-) there are loads of restaurants around the marina of vilamoura. i don't remember any of the names of the restaurants (sorry) as we've only been to vilamoura a couple of times on day trips as we always stay in albufeira.

It's been quite a few years since we were in Vilamoura, and I'm sure you'll get a lot of suggestions from people but for us, we found that the restaurants off/away from the Marina to be better foodwise and pricewise. The four I can remember we enjoyed were

    Don Alfonso

Don Miguel (now renamed Tempo, but it's the same owners/chef)

Concorde (which was in a courtyard, off one of the side streets from the marina)

    Cataplana

Am flying to faro in 2 weeks and plan to get a bus transfer from the airport to albufeira. Plan is to stay there for 2/3 nights then travel round. Is car hire essential or is the bus services that are available any good to get to the smaller off the beaten track places. Would like to maybe stay in alvor and lagos for a night and maybe travel out to the smaller towns during the day .

If you're planning to go to Lagos then yes I'd say car hire is a must.

One of the easiest countries I've driven in is Portugal.

I'd recommend driving aswell, but checkout this website before you decide

Has anyone stayed in portimao ? Accomodation costs are very reasonable compared to the other towns and i am wondering is there a reason for this. It seems to be very central as it is very close to alvor and prai da rocha so could be a good base .
