Insurance on two cars while selling old car

Just wondering but do most insurance companies charge much extra for covering both a new car and an old car, but just while you're attempting to sell the old car.

I have no buyer for my old car. I'm guessing for anyone to drive the car, it will need to be insured (so that other drivers will be covered 3rd party while driving it). I'd imagine it also needs to be fully insured in order for it to be parked in a public place.

Could I get a number of weeks insurance while I'm attempting to sell it ?

As far as I know I think you need two seperate policies, I wouldnt think you will get it much cheaper than your existing one,
maybe a discount for having it with the same company but I wouldnt expect much. How about just transferring your insurance onto your old car if somebody wants a test drive or if you need to bring it somewhere???

Dang. I'm hoping most insurance companies will do policies for less than a year given the circumstance that I'm trying to sell the car ?

Maybe you could pay your policy monthly by direct debit and cancel it when you sell your car, you will prob get better advice from someboby that knows how it works as Im no expert in when it comes to insurance policies.

Other drivers will be covered by your policy only if you have Open Drive.

Doesn't normally have to be insured by you if other drivers have driving other cars extension on their policy...

Contact your insurance company. Tell them you want to insure the vehicle as a temporary addition to your Policy for a period of 4 weeks (they will need a time frame off you.) If you sell it quicker than this you can cancel the cover or if you need to extend it you can contact them again. To park your vehicle in a public place you will need cover but as for other people driving it under their driving of other cars extension of their policy most companies do not need the vehicle to also have its own insurance. Hope this helps

Either Garage insurance or seperate policies.

So, if I can drive other cars 3rd party on my current insurance policy, it means I don't have to insure it at all after moving my current policy to the new car ?

But on the flipside, I can never leave the car in a public place without my presence as the car itself is not insured ?

Check with your company for the definitive answer. Most policies that I've had specify that you can't own the vehicle that you want to drive.

As wicklowandy says, normally you cannot drive a car you own with that extension

I did this recently... simple solution, do it online nice and simple.

Ring your insurance company, they may extend 3rd party coverage on the old car for a few weeks so technically you move the policy to the new car but they will give you 3rd party cover only on the old car for a defined period. Axa did this for me a few years ago when I had an overlap with an old and a new car.

As advised by other posters, the 'driving other cars' provision in your policy does not cover you to drive a car that you own so you can't rely on that while you still own the old car.

    Checked with my insurance provider.

They don't do multicar cover nor will they give me a grave period on my old car on 3rd party.

I think I have two options.

    1. Insure the old car. There's a €40 arrangement fee which wouldn't be refundable upon cancellation of the policy and it would cost an additional €40 to cancel the policy.
    2. Insure the old car and pay by direct debit. First DD is about €100.

From what I can tell, both avenues will roughly cost the same and so I'll prob go with option 1 as I won't be pissing off my insurance provider by just cancelling the DD mid-cover.

This shows how backward Irish insurance companies are, with an open european market by all rights they should have been eaten alive

If you insure it online your insurance company will send you out a proposal form and if you do not send it back within a month they will cancel the policy for you. Painless way to get a months insurance.

Thing is, I don't want to get black listed with insurance companies.

Why would you get black listed? Just ring em and say you no longer need the cover? You wont get blacklisted for cancelling a policy?

Just do a temporary additional vehicle onto your current policy. Simple.
Add the old car onto your curren policy for a few weeks at a cost..that's the easiest way
