Put the wife's 07 VW Touran in for a service into VW garage in airside. 69000 on the clock. Running fine. Got a list and an estimate back for E888 (not vat) not including the service.

    Main problems listed are:
Front brake pad and discs 230
    Rear brake pads 104
Timing belt and water pump 344

Prices include labour but not VAT.

Are they reasonable? Also when should timing belt be changed?

Might be a touch pricey for the rear pads but everything else looks reasonable.

Timing belt is usually around 60k miles.

Last time I got my timing belt done i also got discs and pads done all around, got charged €650 all in from an indy mechanic!
Do you really want to go main dealer? Your going to pay well for it!!

pads and discs over priced. maybe half that if u went local lad/indy mech

id pay the money for a t-belt to be done in a main dealer. may need special tools or the like that the local lad wont have

    imo

Nothing surprising as they are main dealer prices. The question you need to ask yourself, is there any value add in getting this work done by a main dealer on a 7 year old car over a good independant garage?

Thanks for info. Have booked it into an Indy mechanic next week. His quote about 650.

well being a mechanic i am well aware of that thanks:rolleyes:

i would say though, indy mechs will generally buy special tools if they do a lot of a certain type otherwise its just too expensive.

i am not sure if special tools are needed in this case but if they are and the indy tries to do the job without them there could be trouble

    1.6 FSi

I thought a 1.6FSI Touran had a timing CHAIN rather than a timing BELT.

timing chains don't need to be replaced unless damaged. They're pretty much a lifetime part.

This will depend on your engine code though for a certainty. It's a three letter code and you can find it on the sticker in your boot. (under the boot liner).

As above, if it has a belt then it isn't an FSI.

Assuming it is a regular 1.6 petrol then here are some guide prices for your own information:

Timing belt kit and water pump change (VW parts) €260 inc VAT
Rear pads supply and fit (good OEM) €70 inc VAT
Front discs and pads supply and fit (good OEM) €140 inc VAT

ha ya i get ya, depends how well setup ppl are i supose,

we have a renault kit, ford deisel kit and a home made ford petrol kit and after that we dont need special tool for anything else.

dont think the kits were that dear either, theyve definatly made there money back, and we wouldnt be doing many renaults, although the ford deisel kit get good use.

i just refuse to give into the main dealer way of life, there governd by accountants, all there interested in figures, upselling and high labour.

that is not the recipy on how to run a garage imo

i used to be with a main dealer, but the quieter they get, the greadyer they get, trying to meet the quarterly figures, cuting corners.

like these 99e service, where all thats done is a oil and fiter change.

    thats not a service.

    not anywhere near a service..

    rant over :L

am i wrong in sayin that the fsi's in this country arnt actualy programmed to run as designed. ie they only run in stratified? never actualy run in homonogus?
