Renault - Improved Reliability ?

I see on the Renault website they they now offer a 5 year, unlimited mileage warranty on all their vehicles. They describe it as a "bumper to bumper" warranty - whatever that means.

I assume it's fairly new - at least I was unaware of it, until now.

Does that mean that the reliability / durability of Renault cars has greatly improved? If they offered that warranty a few years ago, Renault would be in liquidation, at this stage.

I see on the VW site that they are still offering just a 2 year warranty. They would want to cop on. Or potential purchasers of VW should cop on.

Up to five years ago they were a complete disaster. Megane 2, laguna 2 absolutely dreadful in terms of reliability. The latter's reputation killed the 3 and effectively the name; which was a shame as they're meant to solid out, as is the rest of the current lineup. Wife has the current megane for last two years and it's been flawless, never heard anything bad about them either.

There have been no issues with the new Megane.

I have 60k done on a 2011 dynamique grand megane, and it has a 5 year unlimited mileage warranty. The car is fantastic, equal to any VW or Ford or Jap car.

I am thinking of upgrading to a Gt line 6 speed this year.

I think Nissan have an influence there now. 5 year warranty is hard to argue against. When Fiat were groundbreaking with their 4 year warranty some years back it was the major reason I bought and didn't regret it. I wouldn't buy a car with less than a 3 year warranty now. I currently drive a Mazda and had to replace all the shocks in the warranty period (3 years).

I think vw went to a 3 year warranty since October

Renaults run like ****e longer than most cars run. The one's I've had have never failed to get me home. Even with something catastrophic gone wrong.

Have a 2007 megane. It starts every morning.
had a carbon build up which was cleared and engine updated. Never a problem since.

    Yes but....

My 04 Megane was ok except for the dodgy electric window regulators.
Renault obviously knew about the problem, but once out of warranty didn't want to know.
There are lots of excellent cars available, I will never buy another Renault.

that's how a limited warranty works i suppose. when its over its over, they don't want to know.

in my experience a lot of manufacturers at least "were" reasonable if you were a small bit out of warranty and a had a full history, they might do you a deal, cover the cost of parts etc.

They have definitely improved a great deal and would almost certainly be more reliable than their VAG equivalents at this stage.

    Have a second hand 2010 dynamique coupe, ~80 000KM.
When we bought it sales guy said that Nissan and Renault had bought into each other, Nissan to sort out renaults infamous electrics and renault to improve Nissan mechanics/engineering.

We have only had one electrical problem in a year of owning the car and 40000km; the cruise control caught a gremlin and had to be re-programmed. All diagnosed and fixed at our local garage (not where the car was bought but a renault dealer) for free. I suspect the problem was contributed to, if not caused by, the OH leaving the cruise control constantly on standby even when turning car off/on. (Something similar happened with our previous Leon)

I wouldn't buy from the same sales man again as he was the stereotypical second hand car salesman but I would definitely get a Megane again.

Too many electronics for me even the key is electronic thing .Electronics tend to go after five years and often they cost arm and leg to fix .MY brothers Volvo the head lights were programed things .You had to buy headlights that were were to Irish computer specs .If you bought English French German sets they were different computer specs and would not work .If you got second hand set from scrap yard in Ireland which we did there was risk the computer could not talk to those headlights but in his case they did so it was iffy .New genuine lights costs were €500 and the second hand were €200. The Asian cars don't do this scam .The European cars they make the electronics different for each market using different computer codes specs so if you bought cheaper car from Italy you would forever have to get Italian parts to fix it .
I will never buy any European cars as result of that expensive lesson
The latest family addition is Kia and one year old runs great with 6 more years of the 7 year guarantee to go .My mates with Asian cars are generally always happy campers .My mates 1993 Hyundai one liter thing he bought new in 1993 after 220,000 the clutch went going over the Alps laast year .He swopped it for the same type earlier model car 1990 version more boxy with 110,000 kilometres as it cheaper than €1000 euros in Switzerland to change the clutch .The Swiss plates were removed and on went his Spanish plates lucky the car was same colour
Happy as pig in s****e now driving around Spain put the Spanish plates on not legal but who is looking a 1990 car .
I offered to buy from several car owners in Dublin of the Toyota Carina type 1993 to 1996 versions so I would have spares for mine a 1993 diesel Toyota Carina .They all refused point blank saying its only got maybe 250,000 miles on the clock barely run in . Mine is 250,000 kilometres and going strong driving it now across Europe having taken a winter break in Switzerland got fed up digging it out of the snow .
Bought it for €300 one the best car I ever had keeps going forever at my age might see me into the grave .
I often drive my brothers cars or my mates cars as I don't drink so i get to be driver so always keep tabs of the stuff .

Renault five year warranty, Alfa Romeo five year warranty, VW two year warranty..... new Renault Scenic and Alfa Romeo Giulietta in Top Ten of the 2013 Auto Express customer survey (no VW's)......in 2013 Renaults are as safe a buy as any other European car.

A Renault is a Nissan these days but that's not saying much. I bet if you read the fine print in the warranty it means nothing.

Can you linky the fine print? What does it say? I thought the main stealer servicing everytime you opened the doors kind of thing had been forceably removed from these warranties?

The problem with Renault is their electrics, always will be. Where VAG product have certain weak points that are well known such as front suspension components, Renault's electrical gremlins will reek havoc across a number of components intermittently and cause far more headaches for you as the owner and any mechanic that has to fix it.

A Renault is not a Nissan, a Nissan is a Renault... there's a big difference. From not only owning many, but working for Nissan for years I can tell you current Nissan product is dismal. As example I still have to this day a '95 Nissan Primera that works perfectly. Not a bother or issue with any part of it. My '02 Primera fell to **** electronically and mechanically with about half the miles and nothing of their current offerings are in any way 'Nissan'.
When I worked there they always were in the top three manufacturers sales, along with Ford & Volkswagen alas now they are relegated to 7th, 8th place behind the likes of Hyundai. If it wasnt for the Quasquai they would be gone all together.

This is what happens when companies merge & share cost cutting ideas.
