Leap Card Bus Fares

    Is it just me or do bus drivers routinely change the bus fares for the Leap Card?


    I use the 145, the 45a, and the 7/7b regularly and it seems to me that they change the bus fare daily.

    I take the same journey most days in a week, and I usually end up paying completely different fares from day to day. An example of this would be getting the 7b to UCD one morning for €2.40, and the next morning being asked to pay the max fare for the same journey.

    Similarly, on the 145, getting it for one fare one day, then when I ask for that fare the next day, getting a lecture from the bus driver about how that won't get me where I'm going, and charging me more

    It's proper confusing tbh, does this happen across the entire network?

    Use the Fare Calculator on www.dublinbus.ie and calculate the fare cost.

    Sadly,it's down to a lack of both internal and external communication on the issue of what way the company wishes it's Fare Structure to be Implemented.

    Nobody has,as yet,explained either to staff or customers why the complete removal of all on-street Fare Stage identifiers was sanctioned.

    At a stroke,it left Staff and Customers adrift and the entire system subject to random and incorrect interpretation.

    I would suggest that,if you make a regular journey,then go to the DB Website and it's Fare Calculator input your relevant journey details and print out the pages for both outward and return journeys.

    This will allow you to verify to the Driver that you are paying the correct Fare for your journey.

    NB: Please do be aware that the Fare Calculator is still a new feature and remains in development phase.
    It should also be borne in mind that whilst the actual Fare Stages are now identified on the Fare Calculator,the locations can sometimes be at odds with the Stops which Busdrivers have traditionally been using as stages.

    There are also significant issues with the descriptions of Stop Locations as given in the Timetables vis-a-vis the locations now being advised via the fare Caluclator...be aware that some conflict exists.

    There is no €2.40 leap card fare?

    Where are you getting the bus from and also the leap card isn't always the cheapest way depending on how often you travel and how many buses you take to complete one journey.

    You must state your destination to the driver but what I find helps is saying the likes of UCD and €2.10 in the same sentence for fare if you get what I am trying to say. Then there is no confusion and the machines take a good 2 seconds at least to change from the cash fares to display the leap card fare as the machines are way out of date,
    They would be similar technology from pre 1999.

    +1 If the driver updates the display at each stop then as far as I can see, the display should indicate where the three different fares below the max. (1-3, 4-7 and 8-13 stages) will get you. So for example at a point in time the display on the 46A coming from Dun Laoghaire might say something along the lines of Deansgrange Cross, Stillorgan Library and Donnybrook Bus Garage so if a passenger gets on and asks for UCD, the driver would press the button beside Donnybrook Bus Garage and the correct fare would be shown. Anyone going beyond Donnybrook Bus Garage would be charged the >13 stages fare.

    The problem is that even though the bus is equipped with a GPS receiver (which allows the bus to be tracked for RTPI), the location data is not fed into the driver's system so it still relies on him/her pressing a button when the bus arrives at each stop.
