Upgrading to a Renault Megane?

    Hey everyone,

I'm a total newb when it comes to cars, in that I don't know much about different brands, reliability etc. I've been driving though for 6 years now, currently have a 2002 Peugeot 206 1.1 petrol and am looking to upgrade to a diesel as I'm now going to be doing a lot more mileage.

I was looking at the newer style Renault Megane 1.5 Diesel, from 2009. I test drove one recently and really liked it. However my mechanic said not to touch them as they have a lot of problems with fuel injectors, and the timing belt is very expensive to have done.

Can anyone advise me on this as I kinda decided I was happy to get the Megane (I'm very fussy, typical girl!), but now I don't know what to do. Have any of you owned this car and how did you find it?

    Thanks :)

What other cars from that class have you driven?

I've only test driven two cars since I started looking, that and a Peugeot 308 1.6. I'm not in a major rush to change so I've been kinda taking my time about it

You need to drive more cars so.

The 308, in my opinion isn't a very nice car, is just like a fat 206, there are so many good cars in this class, if you're gonna be driving this car for the next few years, you should really get out there some weekday and visit as many garages as possible and get some perspective on what's out there.

Any newer car will feel more substantial than the 206 so it'd be easy to just buy the first newer car you drive.

I know I should test drive more but like I said, I'm in no rush, so I'm still looking. What is your opinion on the Megane?

I don't think they'll be any less reliable than most cars in that class, and they're pretty cheap.
I'd have my concerns about the 1.5 diesel, but then again I'd be equally concerned about a focus etc.
I think the current megane is a nice car if you avoid the basic ones

There have been no issues with the new Megane. Your mechanic is BSing you. I have 60k done on a 2011 dynamique grand megane, and it has a 5 year unlimited mileage warranty. The car is fantastic, equal to any VW or Ford or Jap car.

I am thinking of upgrading to a Gt line 6 speed this year.

The 1.5 dci is carried over from the previous generations though isn't it?

The 2010 models got the new 1.5 dCi 90 FAP. Not sure if that was a new build or updated.

    FAP is French for DPF.

THe power went from 88 to 90bhp in 2010, not sure how old the original engine is then.
