Hi, I'm looking to build a wooden border for a grave. I've seen quite a few with black timber, can this be bought pretreated and if so, would gardening centres or building providers be the best bet? I'm in Dublin 15.

Probably just ordinary pressure-treated wood stained black with an outdoor woodstain. Any of those places you mentioned (builders providers are usually cheaper than garden centres) could supply the treated timber and you stain it yourself before installing.

It could be Ebony but I imagine that's horrendously expensive.

I'm doing my boat deck like this and will be dying it "ebonizing" http://www.woodworkweb.com/woodwork-topics/wood-finishing/24--ebonizing-wood.html it looks like a solid black but as you get closer you can see the grain.

Yeah, that seems to be the best plan, I'll hold off with the ebony unless a secret inheritance materialises!

'Ronseal 5 year woodstain' is a good, long lasting finish and is easy to apply. Suggest you get the 'blackest' colour available in that range, give the timber 2 or 3 coats, the finish should last well over 5 years.

PT (pressure treated) new railway sleepers are 18-20 euro in most builders

    2400mm x 100mm x 200mm long.

Then get a tub of Ridgewood black timber stain and give the sleepers 2 coats of the stain.

Also use a cordless screwgun and some 120mm outdoor decking screws or galvanized coach screws to secure the sleepers together.

Allow 2 hours in between each coat of Ridgewood.

    Simples.:)
