Handicap in societies

Joined a society across the water, have played three games and they have given me a handicap of 19. My scores for those three cards was 30,32,25. Is this handicap not a bit low was expecting 21/22. The issue I have is that if you play to your handicap once over the twenty outings you qualify for the year end tournament. Don't want to complain as I m new to the guys without having a basis.

you play in their society, you play by their rules :)

Though shooting a 30 and a 32 means to them you have room for improvement and if you were going to join a golf club, you could expect to be awarded a similar handicap

Lower I would think. I had 3 cards of low 20s and was given 18 in my club

All handicaps have a Buffer Zone, ie if you shoot with in a certain number of shots of your handicap it does not go up.

This ranges from +1 to +4 depending on your handicap. Think the cut off for category 3 (+3) is 19 h/c so your just out side this, i.e a 19 h/c would be expected to shoot 33 points at least.

Most society's would air on the side of caution so your round about the fare number

    (Ignoring CSS here)

If you scored 32 points once in three outings off 19 then I'd say the handicap was fair. You've only to improve by 4 shots to play to your handicap.

The other thing to note is that a society can use whatever criteria it wishes to determine handicaps. Generally they try to avoid the same people winning every week.

Society handicap is about distribution of prizes, it is not related to golfing ability
